MLB news: Mariners lock up King Felix long-term

Is it just me or is this an offseason to remember in Seattle?

The Mariners just locked up ace Felix Hernandez – who is only 23, folks – to a five-year deal.

Hernandez was 19-5 last year, tied for the most wins in the major leagues, made his first All-Star team and had a career-high 217 strikeouts with a career-low 2.49 ERA.

To be exact…The deal, which came as the sides were set to exchange figures for salary arbitration, is reportedly worth between $75 million and $80 million US.

He made $3.8 million last year and was scheduled to become eligible for free agency after the 2011 season.

Seems like everyone wins on that one. Toss in the Cliff Lee acquisition, Chone Figgins signing and Milton Bradley trade and it seems Seattle’s making all the right moves entering the 2010 season.

Not to be forgotten Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik also re-signed centre-fielder Franklin Gutierrez and the most popular player in Mariner history Ken Griffey Jr.
