Sports News – MLB news: Fan dies after fall at Coors Field; Homer Bailey sprains shoulder; Carlos Zambrano wins with arm, bat

Carlos Zambrano wins with arm, bat

A fan is dead after falling 20 feet and landing on his head at Coors Field this past Monday. Robert Seamans, 27, was attempting to slide down a railing before losing his balance; he hit the concrete head-first after falling. No disrespect to the Seamans family – but let’s hope Robert’s death is at least a lesson to other baseball fans that sliding down steel railings is never, ever a good idea.

Homer Bailey finally looked like he was becoming the dominant pitcher the Reds hoped he’d be this season, so it’s a real shame to see him on the shelf now. He left yesterday’s start against the Phillies with what was originally diagnosed as muscle spasms. However, it turns out that he has a sprained shoulder. There’s no immediate timetable for his return.

Carlos Zambrano has won his share of games thanks to his electric arsenal of pitches but the big Cubs righthander also gets it done with the bat regularly. He won after allowing two runs in six innings against the Mets yesterday but Big Z also went 3 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. He’s a .241 hitter with 22 homers in 668 career at-bats.

NBA news: Kobe has “irreversible” knee problems; Rockets courting Kevin McHale; Bargnani denies wanting to leave Toronto

Is it possible that Kobe Bryant’s Hall-of-Fame career is about to start its gradual decline? Lakers team trainer Gary Vitti explained this week that “structurally there are some issues [with Kobe’s knee] that cannot be reversed, but can be dealt with.”

He added that while Kobe doesn’t have arthritis, he has some “joint degeneration” in his knee.

The Houston Rockets appear close to nailing down Kevin McHale as their next head coach. General manager Daryl Morey reportedly likes him over Lawrence Frank (Celtics) and Dwane Casey (Mavericks). McHale, now a TNT analyst, has limited coaching experience. He guided the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 19-12 record to finish the 2004-05 season and a 20-43 mark to end 2008-09.

Former first overall pick Andrea Bargnani had a mixup this week when his quotes on an Italian TV station were reportedly misinterpreted or at least taken out of context. Sky Sports asked him which NBA team he’d like to play for if given the choice.

“I want to stay in Toronto, at least this is the politically correct answer,” he said. “If [I am] to go somewhere else, I’d like a warm climate city and a team where I can actually play my role.”

Bargnani later clarified that the portrayal of his words was “inaccurate” and that “I want to make clear my love for Toronto and that I consider the city a second home. I never said that I want to leave Toronto and I’m sorry if fans interpreted the inaccuracy that way.”

NFL news: Aqib Talib indicted on assault charges

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback was indicted today in Dallas on felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He could face from two to 20 years in prison if convicted. Police reports allege that Talib brandished a gun during the incident in question, hit his sister’s boyfriend with it and fired several shots in the boyfriend’s direction as he fled the scene.
