Sports News – MLB news: Harmon Killebrew dead at 74; Historically bad night for Vin Mazzaro; John Lackey to DL

Historically bad night for Vin Mazzaro

Hall-of-Famer Harmon Killebrew is dead at 74. He succumbed to esophageal cancer after doctors declared his illness incurable and he entered hospice care last week. The 11-time All-Star is 11th all-time in homers with 573 and, along with Babe Ruth, is second all-time with eight seasons of 40-plus homers to his name.

How bad was pitcher Vin Mazzaro for the Kansas City Royals last night? Bad enough to accomplish something not seen since 1947. He allowed 14 runs in 2.1 innings, becoming the third pitcher since 1947 to allow 14 earned runs in a game and the first to allow that many in fewer than three innings. In a shocking twist, Mazzaro was demoted to the minors after his performance.

John Lackey, two years into a five-year, $82.5-million contract, has been a disaster with the Red Sox this season, going 2-5 with an 8.01 ERA. But is an injury the reason for his struggles? Boston placed him on the 15-day DL yesterday due to a strained right elbow.

NFL news: Appeals court grants NFL request to uphold lockout; Rush Limbaugh defends Donovan McNabb

We still may not see NFL football for a while after all. The owners won a major battle on Monday when the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis ruled that they have a right to keep the lockout in place. Next up, the court will hold a hearing on June 3 during which both sides will have 30 minutes to present oral arguments on the legality of the lockout.

ESPN.com reports that the owners are preparing a new proposal for the players after both sides agreed to extend what was a productive negotiation session on Monday.

Believe it or not, Rush Limbaugh of all people spoke out to defend Donovan McNabb last week after boxer Bernard Hopkins criticized him for not being black enough. “This poor guy cannot catch a break and it’s disgruntled African-Americans that are jumping on his case – about the way he was raised?” Limbaugh said. “His parents are out there having to defend the way they raised him and all they tried to do was give him opportunity after opportunity and expose him to various things – he and his brother to various things – in life.”

Limbaugh’s defense is a bit surprising since he resigned as an NFL commentator in2003 after saying that McNabb was overrated and that the media “has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well.”

NBA news: Doc Rivers regrets Kendrick Perkins trade; League wants $45-million hard salary cap

Are the eliminated Boston Celtics watching longingly as their beloved center and teammate, Kendrick Perkins, now plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference final? It appears so, based on coach Doc Rivers’ recent comments.

Rivers said yesterday that he didn’t think the team should’ve traded Perkins and Nate Robinson for Jeff Green, Nenad Krstic and a first-rounder mid-season. He believes Green and Krstic will be valuable players but that the timing of the deal was wrong.

“When you lose Perk, you take that one guy out of that starting lineup,” he said. “Now there’s the fifth guy who doesn’t know your offense three years ago. He only knows what he knows since he’s been there and that limited our group.”

NBA union chief Billy Hunter has spoken out against the league’s proposal for the next collective bargaining agreement. The new proposal includes a $45 million hard salary cap that would guarantee no more than 50 per cent of a player’s first $8 million in salary; for contracts higher than $8 million, the guarantee would drop to 25 per cent.

Hunter said that the change would “not only harm players’ economic interests individually, but it would also significantly change the culture of the league collectively. “
