Sports News – MLB news: Kendrys Morales done for season; Shoulder surgery for Braden; Soto hits DL; Mets clubhouse man indicted for theft

Mets clubhouse man indicted for theft

The inevitable became reality for star Los Angeles Angels first baseman Kendrys Morales on Wednesday. It was announced that he’ll require a second surgery on his ankle. He fractured it last season while celebrating a home run and missed the rest of 2010. This year, he hadn’t played a game yet because of continued discomfort. Doctors determined that Morales needs another surgery to clean up scar tissue and bone cysts. He’ll need six months to recover; his season is over before it started.

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Dallas Braden won’t step on a baseball field any time soon, either. He’ll have surgery Monday to repair a torn capsule in his shoulder. He was 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA this season.

The Chicago Cubs have placed catcher Geovany Soto on the 15-day DL with a groin injury. He hasn’t played since May 8 and is batting just .226 on the year with three homers.

Former New York Mets clubhouse manager Charlie Samuels was indicted Tuesday for criminal possession of gamer memorabilia, which includes signed jerseys from the 1986 World Series team and the first game after 9/11. Samuels was also charged with embezzling roughly $25,000 through falsified expense reports and for failing to report more than $200,000 in tips and dues he received in 2008 and 2009.

Charlie, my man – if you’re getting 200 grand in tips alone – why on Earth are you stealing memorabilia and embezzling money? He has pleaded not guilty.

NBA news: Robert Traylor found dead; Doc Rivers “probably” returning to Celtics; All-Rookie team announced

Remember Robert “Tractor” Traylor? The former Michigan star and eventual NBA player who was famous for shattering backboards? Tragedy struck Wednesday as he was found dead. He was missing for three days in Puerto Rico, where he had been playing professionally, before his body was discovered at his beach apartment.

The questions about coach Doc Rivers’ future with the Boston Celtics began Wednesday night after the Miami Heat eliminated them from the playoffs in five games. Rivers said that he will “probably” return next year.

Not surprisingly, Blake Griffin made the 2010-11 NBA All-Rookie Team, which was announced yesterday. Joining him are John Wall, Landry Fields, DeMarcus Cousins and Gary Neal.

Making the second team: Wesley Johnson, Eric Bledsoe, Greg Monroe, Derrick Favors and Paul George.

NHL news: Back surgery for Chris Pronger; Shea Weber staying in Nashville

It turns out it wasn’t just a lingering hand injury that limited Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger to three games in the 2011 playoffs. He also had a herniated disc. Pronger will have back surgery today; the procedure is  discectomy, which involves removing the herniated disc material pressing on a nerve root or spinal cord.

Shea Weber will be a restricted free agent on July 1 in theory but the Norris Trophy-nominated defenseman expects to remain a Nashville Predator next season.

“It’s going to get done,” the captain told The Tennessean. “Obviously, this is a place I love to play, and you saw how close we were this year to getting to the conference finals, and possibly further. This is a place I want to be, and it’s only a matter of time before something gets done.”

NFL news: Kordell Stewart arrested; Bernard Hopkins says McNabb isn’t “black enough”

Former NFL quarterback Kordell Stewart, now an ESPN analyst, was arrested Wednesday and charged with driving with a suspended license. He was also charged with speeding. He was freed on $3,000 bond a few hours later.

Boxer Bernard Hopkins, a Philadelphia native, ripped ex-Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb his week, suggesting McNabb isn’t black enough. He said McNabb is “the guy in the house, while everybody is in the field” and that “He’s got a suntan. That’s all.”
