Sports News – NFL news: Chad Ochocinco to try bull riding; new stadium for Vikings; Alan Faneca retires

NFL news: Chad Ochocinco to try bull riding

What will Chad Ochocinco think of next? Bull riding, apparently. After his failed Major League Soccer tryout, the soon-to-be-former Bengals receiver has a new challenge. He’s accepted a dare from Professional Bull Riders chief operating officer Sean Gleason to ride a bull at the LucasOil Invitational this weekend.

If Ochocinco can ride the bull at all, he gets $10,000. If he stays on for eight seconds, he’ll win a truck and get the right to rename the bull.

The writing was on the wall for the Metrodome in Minnesota. The Twins left for Target Field last year and the 31-year-old building’s roof collapsed in December, leaving the Vikings homeless. So it’s no surprise that Vikes owner Zygi Wilf has announced that a new stadium is on the way.

The new venue will cost $884 million to build and $173-million for on-site infrastructure. The Viking will chip in $407 million and the State of Minnesota will pitch $300 million; the project will create 13,000 full and part-time jobs.

After a storied career, Arizona Cardinals offensive guard Alan Faneca is calling it a career. The former first-round pick spend 10 seasons with the Pittsburgh steelers, two with the New York Jets and one with Arizona. He was a nine-time Pro Bowler and nine-time All-Pro selection; he won the Super Bowl with the Steelers in the 2005 season.

NHL news: Agent Reynolds slams Avery for supporting gay marriage

Hockey agent Todd Reynolds may have made some enemies this week via Twitter after slamming both Sean Avery and same-sex marriage.

Avery, the controversial New York Rangers agitator, recently appeared in a video where he supported the New Yorkers for Marriage Equality campaign. He also said in the past that he would “stand beside” any NHL gay player who wished to come out.

Reynolds tweeted, “Very sad to read Sean Avery’s misguided support of same-gender ‘marriage.’ Legal or not, it will always be wrong.”

Reynolds later added, “To clarify, this is not hatred or bigotry towards gays. It is not intolerance in any way, shape or form. I believe we are all equal.” He followed up, “But i believe in the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman. This is my personal viewpoint. I do not hate anyone.”

MLB news: Tony La Russa out with shingles; Jason Heyward leaves with shoulder injury

The St. Louis Cardinals will try to maintain their lead in the National League Central without manager Tony La Russa for the next while. He’s out indefinitely while he recovers from shingles. There’s no timetable for his return. Bench coach Joe Pettini will manage the Cards in La Russa’s absence.

No one doubts Jason Heyward’s immense talent but the sophomore Atlanta Braves outfielder can’t seem to stay healthy. He left Tuesday’s game against Washington with a nagging shoulder injury. He said the pain has bothered him since spring training and has gotten worse recently. He said his hand went numb following his last at-bat on Tuesday. He’ll have an MRI on Thursday.

NBA news: League, union hold labor talks; No update on Ricky Rubio; Andrew Bynum suspended for elbow

With the NBA’s current collective bargaining agreement set to expire on June 30, commissioner David Stern and players union chief Billy Hunter have commenced face-to-face negotiations. Players aren’t happy with the owners’ current proposal, which wants an $800-million rollback in salaries and a hard salary cap similar to the NFL’s.

Will former No. 5 overall draft pick Ricky Rubio ever come to the NBA and join the Minnesota Timberwolves? We still don’t know. T-Wolves president David Kahn recently spent a week in Spain as part of a “recruiting trip” for the 20-year-old guard. Yep, he had to recruit his own player. Rubio had a prohibitive buyout with his Spanish team that barred him from playing in the NBA until 2011.

Los Angeles Lakers Andrew Bynum has been suspended for the first five games of 2011-12 for his elbow on Dallas’ J.J. Barea. He drilled Barea with an elbow to the ribs with the Lakers trailing by 32 in L.A.’s season-ending, Game-4 loss to the Mavericks.
