Sports News – NFL news: Tiki Barber coming out of retirement

Tiki Barber To Play in 2011?

Sigh. During an era in which 31 is considered “old” for an NFL running back, Tiki Barber is making a comeback at the ripe age of 35 (36 when the 2011 season starts). His agent confirmed Tuesday that he has officially filed “unretirement” papers with the NFL.

The New York Giants still own the rights to Barber, who last played in 2006 when he tallied more than 2,100 all-purpose yards. However, they’ve indicated that they will release Barber as soon as a new collective bargaining agreement is finalized. That’s no surprise, as Tiki wasn’t exactly popular among his Giants teammates.

So why would Barber try a comeback now? Well, rumor has it he’s broke after his recent divorce…

NHL news: Chara to have disciplinary hearing after knocking Pacioretty unconscious; Bruce Boudreau calls Steven Stamkos a “diver”

If you’re a hockey fan at all, you’ve probably heard the water cooler talk today already about Zdeno Chara’s hit on Max Pacioretty. The 6’9” Bruins defender ran the Canadiens forward head-first into the partition that separates the bench from the glass. Pacioretty was knocked out cold and taken to hospital after leaving the ice on a stretcher.

The hit was debatable. Was it a harmless play that looked bad just because it happened at a dangerous part of the rink? Or did Chara deliberately run Pacioretty’s head into the partition? I’ve watched the replay a dozen times and still can’t tell. Chara got a match penalty for the hit and is scheduled for a disciplinary hearing with the league today.

According to Washington Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau, NHL goal-scoring leader Steven Stamkos is a diver. Referring to the Tampa Bay Lightning leading the league in power-play attempts, he said Monday that Stamkos “dives every two seconds” and that “you start to get a hate on for guys like that.” Stamkos didn’t take the bait, only saying that he’s not really worried about what Boudreau has to say.

NBA news: League considering concussion policy; Kobe moves into sixth all-time in scoring

You can understand it happening in the NFL and NHL – but who knew that the NBA was so vulnerable to concussions? Six players have suffered concussions or concussion-like symptoms over the past four weeks.

As a result, the NBA in considering a policy that would create a league-wide protocol for examining players and assessing whether they’re fit to return to play. Currently, each team follows its own system.

Kobe Bryant continues to climb the NBA’s all-time scoring ranks. On Tuesday, he passes Moses Malone to take sixth-place. He’s passed six different players this season. Next up is his old buddy Shaquille O’Neal, who sits more than 1,000 points ahead.

MLB news: Zack Greinke breaks rib; Kendry Morales’ agent stole from him; Phillies worried about Chase Utley’s knee

It looks like the Milwaukee Brewers hype train will slow ever so slightly to start the season. Freshly acquired ace Zack Greinke has a fractured rib and will miss his first few starts of the regular season as he’ll need up to six weeks of recovery time. Greinke suffered the injury playing basketball. Tsk, tsk.

A South Florida sports agent has been charged with robbing Angels first baseman Kendry Morales. Rodney Fernandez, who worked for Hendricks Sports Management from 2008 to 2009, withdrew over $300,000 from Morales’ account without permission. He turned himself into police on Monday.

Attention, fantasy poolies: Chase Utley looks like he may slip out of the first round in some drafts. The Phillies are increasingly concerned with his bad knee, which has been diagnosed with tendinitis. They’re seeking multiple opinions and exhausting “non-operative treatment.” Gulp.
