Sports News – NFL news: Owners, union back at the table with deadline extended; former Raider Smith charged with murder; Burress out of jail June 6

NFL News: Owners + CBA Take Center Stage Once Again

The NFL owners and players union haven’t given up hope on a new collective bargaining agreement just yet. After agreeing last week to extend the deadline for the current CBA’s expiry to this coming Friday, the two sides will return to the table today. They’ve negotiated for 11 of the past 15 days. If no deal is struck by Friday, owners may opt to lock out the players heading into the 2011 season.

Anthony Wayne Smith, a defensive end who played for the Raiders from 1991-98, is one of three men charged with murdering Maurilio Ponce in October2008. He, Dewann Wesley White and Charles Eric Honest were charged last month and arrested last week. What’s with all three guys having triple names?

Plaxico Burress’ jail sentence is almost finished. He went to jail in September 2009 after accidentally shooting himself in the leg and pleading guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon. In the end, he’ll serve 21 months; he’ll be released three months early on June 6 for good behavior. It remains to be seen if a team will take a chance on the former Pro Bowl wideout.

Not surprisingly, the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers have rewarded coach Mike McCarthy with a multi-year contract extension. He’s 53-34 since taking over in 2006.

MLB news: Umpires, players meet to discuss strained relationship; Frank Catalanotto retires

Maybe the Armando Galarraga incident last summer was the last straw? Baseball umpires and the MLB players association met yesterday to discuss their rocky relationship yesterday. Among the issues discussed were increased complaints from the players about certain umpires and the transparency with which umpires are disciplined for their actions toward players.

Frank “Little Cat” Catalanotto’s Major League Baseball career is over. The 36-year-old outfielder announced his retirement on Sunday. He batted .291 over his 14-year career with the Tigers, Rangers, Blue Jays, Brewers and Mets.

NBA news: Heat players “crying” over choking problems; Eric Gordon hurt again; Chris Paul concussed; Mark Cuban teaming up with Charlie Sheen?

Looks like the Miami Heat players aren’t immune to all the criticism they’ve taken all year – especially the recent barbs about their inability to beat other contenders and perform in the clutch.

Miami is 1-9 against the NBA’s top five teams and 1-16 in games decided on the final possession. Wow. It’s no wonder the guys have started crying. After last night’s one-point defeat to the Chicago Bulls, Miami’s fourth in a row, head coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters “this is painful for every single one of us to go through this, there are a couple of guys crying in the locker room.”

Eric Gordon can’t catch a break…or, well, can’t stop catching breaks. In his second game since returning from a broken wrist, he took a hard foul from Timofey Mozgov, hit the floor and chipped the bone in that same wrist. The Clippers’ leading scorer is expected to miss seven to 10 days.

Chris Paul’s frustrating season got worse yesterday. He left the court on a stretcher after slamming his head against Ramon Sessions while diving for a loose ball and has since been diagnosed with a concussion. He’s out indefinitely.

The Phoenix Suns’ playoff push took a hit over the weekend – maybe. Channing Frye dislocated his shoulder against Oklahoma City on Sunday but did manage to pop it back into place. So who knows how much time, if any, he’ll miss?

Charlie Sheen has absolutely lost his mind and taken over all news media over the last few weeks. So it was only a matter of time before Mark Cuban got his hands on him, I suppose. Cuban is in talks to set up a Sheen TV show on HDNet, which Cuban owns. It could be a reality show, or a talk show, or maybe just an hour of Sheen making out with ex-porn stars. We don’t know yet. The show is in its development phase.
