Sports News – MLB news: Three Rays players robbed; Bitter divorce for Cubs, Carlos Silva; Nationals trade Nyjer Morgan to Brewers

Three Rays players robbed

Tampa Bay Rays Evan Longoria, David Price and Reid Brignac had their spring training home burglarized over the weekend. Approximately $50,000 worth of items was stolen, including a 60-inch flat-screen TV, three iPads, two Xbox systems and several valuable watches. Longoria also had his 1967 Chevy Camaro Stolen earlier this spring.

The Chicago Cubs and Carlos Silva have parted ways. Silva wasn’t happy after learning that he’d been left out of their starting rotation and publicly stated that there was “no chance” he’d accept an assignment to Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs officially released the right-hander on Sunday. Silva had a 10.90 ERA this spring and had a public dugout altercation with Aramis Ramirez.

Volatile outfielder Nyjer Morgan has a new team. The Washington Nationals traded the centerfielder to the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday after naming Rick Ankiel their starter. The Brewers received cash and utility-man prospect Cutter Dykstra, son of former major-leaguer Lenny Dykstra.

NBA news: MRI for Nick Young’s knee; D-Wade bruises tailbone; Manu Ginobili injures quad; Joe Johnson sprains thumb

The injury bug bit several NBA teams over the weekend. Washington Wizards leading scorer Nick Young aggravated a previous knee injury during Sunday’s loss to Golden State and is scheduled for an MRI today.

During a game in which Mike Miller also succumbed to a knee injury, the Miami Heat lost Dwyane Wade to a bruised tailbone – briefly. Wade went to the sidelines before returning to add to the 30 points he dropped on Houston. He’s expected to play through the injury this week.

San Antonio’s Manu Ginobili left Sunday night’s game against Memphis after colliding with Marc Gasol and injured his quad. Ginobili tried to return but quickly left again. There’s no word yet on how severe the injury is.

Joe Johnson, Atlanta’s top scorer, sprained his right thumb Friday night against the New Jersey Nets. Though X-rays on Saturday were negative, Johnson didn’t accompany the Hawks to Cleveland.

NHL news: Anze Kopitar breaks ankle; Jordan Leopold breaks hand; Boo birds attack Scott Gomez

The Los Angeles Kings, already without Justin Williams, suffered a huge blow to their chances of a deep playoff run over the weekend. Top scorer Anze Kopitar broke his ankle against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday and had to be helped off the ice. He had 25 goals and 73 points for L.A. this season and could return should the Kings reach the second round of the playoffs.

The Buffalo Sabres keep winning as they strive to lock down the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference but will have to soldier on without one of their key defenders. Jordan Leopold broke his hand on Friday. He stayed in the game and even scored a goal but didn’t play Saturday night. Leopold will miss at least the rest of the regular season but probably a lot more time than that.

The Montreal Canadiens and, more specifically, Scott Gomez were attacked by the boo birds in their own building Saturday night. During their 2-0 defeat, which extended their losing streak to three games, Gomez was booed every time he touched the puck. He has just seven goals and is a minus-16 in 74 games with the Habs this season. Montreal has been outscored 11-0 over its last three contests.

NFL news: Jason Peters arrested in Louisiana; Tom Zbikowski wins boxing match; Michael Vick skips awards dinner

Eagles left tackle Jason Peters was arrested early Saturday in Shreveport, Louisiana for disturbing the peace. Few details are known about the incident other than that he was playing “loud music.” He has since been released from the Shreveport City Jail.

Tom Zbikowski, the Baltimore Ravens safety and part of the impressive family of Zbikowski athletes, won a four-round decision over Caleb Grummet in a boxing match Saturday night. Zbikowski, who was 75-15 as an amateur, is now 3-0 as an amateur. His victory Saturday in Atlantic City was his second in two weeks. He plans to continue boxing as long as the lockout goes.

Michael Vick was a no-show at an awards dinner that was supposed to honor him on Saturday night. The Southeastern Virginia Arts Association was supposed to celebrate Vick as a “hero.”
