Sports News – NCAA Basketball news: Grant Hill, Jalen Rose feud over “Uncle Tom” comments

Grant Hill, Jalen Rose feud over “Uncle Tom”

Jalen Rose started a scandal this week when his controversial comments about former Duke players were revealed in the ESPN documentary “Fab Five.” In the film, Rose said that, while he played for Michigan in the early 1990s, he “hated Duke and I hated everything Duke stood for. Schools like Duke didn’t recruit players like me. I felt like they only recruited black players that were Uncle Toms.”

Rose was taking a shot at the culture of “whitewashed” black players at Duke. Grant Hill, a former Blue Devil, took major exception to the comments. In a letter he sent to the New York Times this week, Hill said” “it’s is insulting and ignorant to suggest that men like Johnny Dawkins, Tommy Amaker, Billy King, Tony Lang, Thomas Hill, Jeff Capel, Kenny Blakeney, Jay Williams, Shane Battier and Chris Duhon ever sold out their race.”

NHL news: Dany Heatley suspended two games

The NHL’s crackdown on questionable hits continues. On Wednesday, the league suspended San Jose Sharks sniper Dany Heatley for his hit to the head of Dallas’ Steve Ott on Tuesday. The hit occurred behind the action and that obviously makes it especially sketchy.

NBA news: Kings to become “Royals” if they move? Kendrick Perkins slams Lakers’ stars, coach

The Sacramento Kings have until April 18 to formally request a move to a new location. If they do – and they’re expected to – it looks like they’ll become the Royals. “Anaheim Royals,” “Anaheim Royals of Southern California,” “Orange County Royals” and “Los Angeles Royals” were all registered as potential new names for the Kings.

Kendrick Perkins doesn’t mince words when it comes to the L.A. Lakers. “I don’t like Pau Gasol or Phil Jackson,” the Oklahoma City center said in an interview with ESPN the Magazine this week. “Phil is arrogant. Pau is soft.” He also added that Kobe Bryant “tries to bring out his toughness, but he’s still soft.”

MLB news: John Smoltz to compete in Nationwide Tour event; Morales’ leg, Utley’s knee not improving

John Smoltz, a multi-tooled athlete, isn’t giving up his dream of converting from MLB pitcher to pro golfer. He’s accepted a sponsor’s exemption to play a Nationwide Tour event at the end of April. Last year, he failed to qualify for the U.S. Open but he did finish second in a celebrity event.

Could the Los Angeles Angels start 2011 slowly? Their top slugger, Kendrys Morales, may not be ready for Opening Day. He’s reportedly hit a “plateau” in his recovery from a broken leg suffered during a home-run celebration last season. He was supposed to try running curves this week but still isn’t ready.

The news isn’t good for Phillies second baseman Chase Utley either. He’s seen “minimal improvement” to the tendinitis in his right knee. There’s still no timetable for his return.

NFL news: Dallas Clark to appear on Criminal Minds; MLS tryout for Chad Ochocinco; NFLPA plans alternative event for draft

You have to give the locked-out NFL players credit for staying busy as they prepare to miss the 2011 season. Colts tight end Dallas Clark is set to appear on the CBS drama Criminal Minds on April 13. He says the role has nothing to do with money and is simply about fulfilling a dream.

Chad Ochocinco is trying his hand at soccer. A week after he challenged UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, Ochocinco has secured himself a tryout with Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer. The tryout will last four days.

As the NFLPA sees it, prospective NFLers shouldn’t celebrate being drafted with the very people who are locking them out. As a result, the union will stage an alternative event for players to attend during the draft from April 28 to 30.
