Water Cooler – July 27th, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

Yawn, another no hitter. Guess we’ll start this sleepy day of news with Matt Garza’s story.

MLB news: Matt Garza throws no-hitter; Joe Mauer explodes; bad luck for Haren, Coghlan

Matt Garza Throws A No-Hitter

So I’m exaggerating how boring last night was in baseball. It was actually quite a wild one. But these no-hitters are becoming absurd.

Tampa’s Matt Garza became the fifth man to throw a no-no this season, facing the minimum 27 batters in a 5-0 win over Detroit. He walked one and struck out six in what was the first no-hitter in Rays franchise history.

Joe Mauer had a legendary night of his own for the Minnesota Twins. The Reigning American League MVP finally showed that form again last night, going five for five with seven RBI.

Dan Haren wasn’t so lucky. Not only did he take the loss after allowing seven hits and two runs in 4.2 innings (with eight strikeouts), he left the game early after being hit by a line drive – on his throwing arm.

He’ll probably have an X-Ray today to find out if anything is broken.

And Haren’s injury wasn’t even the strangest of the night. Florida’s Chris Coghlan was injured last night while celebrating Wes Helms’ walkoff home run against Atlanta. Coghlan somehow tore his meniscus while hitting Helms with a pie in the face.

You can’t make this stuff up.

NFL news: Jets join the bidding for Terrell Owens; Brett Favre “could play until 50”’

The New York Jets are the latest team to join the bidding war for Terrell Owens. The deal makes sense in that the Jets will start the season somewhat shorthanded at wideout with Santonio Holmes suspended. On the other hand, when Holmes returns, there won’t be many balls to go around between Holmes, Owens, Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery.

The Rams have reportedly backed off and the Bengals are still in hot pursuit of Owens.

Cincy remains the favorite to land him.

It’s not an official indication that Brett Favre will return to play football in 2010, but it sure fuels the fire. Favre told the USA Today that while “you gotta quit sometime….maybe I will be doing this when I’m 50 years old, who knows?”

If that’s even a possibility, you have to think Favre will be a Viking again this season.

NBA news: Cavaliers trade West, Telfair to Timberwolves for Sessions, Hollins

I have to say – without knowing if they’ve actually gotten better, we can at least say the Minnesota Timberwolves have quietly been one of basketball’s busier teams this offseason.

Yesterday, they acquired Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair from the Cleveland Cavaliers for Ramon Sessions and Ryan Hollins.

The T-Wolves, who are cleaning house, will waive West. In Sessions, the Cavs get a durable guard who played all 82 games in 2009-10, averaging 8.2 points.
