Today’s Sports News – NFL news: Ray Lewis tied to deer-antler spray PED scandal; Tom Brady to have foot surgery

Tom Brady - Foot Surgery? How Ironic...

Here’s some more evidence to support the theory that athletes are always one step ahead in the PED game. The latest thing: deer antler spray. Apparently, you can harvest the coating that covers deer antlers, grind it into a powder, then ingest it via a pill or a mouth spray.

Because it’s completely natural, it’s extremely hard to detect. It requires a blood test (which the NFL, for example, doesn’t do) and it must happen at the proper time. Bengals safety Roy Williams says he uses the mouth spray all the time – “two to three times a day.” The latest named linked to the spray is Ray Lewis; the Ravens linebacker is connected to the issue via texts messages sent to a supplier.

Maybe Tom Brady could try out some mouth spray to help his ailing foot heal faster. Brady is reportedly having surgery today on a lingering stress fracture in his right foot.

MLB news: Twins sign Pavano for two years, $16.5 million

Innings eater Carl Pavano won 17 games, went the distance seven times and tallied 221 innings pitched for the Minnesota Twins last season. As a result, they just couldn’t let him go. They signed Pavano to a two-year deal worth $16.5 million yesterday.

NBA news: Nets bow out of Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes

Carmelo Anthony is probably happy knowing his future team will be better than the New Jersey Nets. Team owner Mikhail Prokhorov has officially pulled the Nets’ name from the hat after weeks – months? – of negotiations with the Denver Nuggets.

“There comes a time when the price is simply too expensive,” Prokhorov said. “I am instructing our team to walk away from the deal.” He added the publicness of the negotiations bothered him and that he believes the uncertainty regarding the deal distracting the Nets and cost them some victories.

NHL news: Brandon Dubinsky, Mike Cammalleri out a month

Two Eastern conference playoff hopefuls suffered blows yesterday. Alaskan Brandon Dubinsky, who leads the New York Rangers with 17 goals and 38 points, will miss three to four weeks with a stress fracture in his left leg. The Broadway Blueshirts will need others to step up in his place; Marian Gaborik looked up to the task last night when he scored four goals against the Leafs.

The Montreal Canadiens have lost arguably their most dangerous sniper. Michael Cammalleri separated his shoulder on Tuesday night and is expected to miss a month.
