Today’s Sports News

NBA news: Amar’e Stoudemire luring Carmelo Anthony to New York? LeBron mocks the Cavs

Amare Stoudemire luring Carmelo Anthony to New York?

We may as well get used to the Melo rumors every day now. The latest involves the New York Knicks, not the New Jersey Nets. MVP candidate Amar’e Stoudemire reportedly reached out to Carmelo Anthony this week to tell him that the Knicks want him and that he should resist any proposed deal with the New Jersey Nets. The plot thickens.

LeBron James is having fun now with the Miami Heat, who have won 21 of 22. But don’t count on him to take the high road when it comes to his former team. After the Cavaliers’ humiliating, 55-point loss to the Lakers, LeBron took to Twitter:

“Crazy. Karma is a b****. Gets you every time. It’s not good to wish bad on anybody. God sees everything!”

NFL news: Panthers name Ron Rivera head coach

The NFL officially has its second-ever Latino head coach. The Carolina Panthers named Ron Rivera to the job yesterday. Rivera, a former linebacker with the Monsters of the Midway 1985 Chicago Bears, was the San Diego Chargers’ defensive co-ordinator before taking the big job with last-place Carolina.

MLB news: Trevor Hoffman retires; Josh Hamilton hospitalized with pneumonia

Major League Baseball’s all-time saves leader is calling it quits. Trevor Hoffman announced his retirement yesterday after 18 seasons and 601 saves. The 43-year-old, who will take a front office job with the San Diego Padres, will forever be synonymous with the AC/DC track “Hells Bells.” The majors should retire that entrance song, agreed?

Reigning American League MVP Josh Hamilton is hospitalized with pneumonia. The big fella was diagnosed on Monday and should be released some time today. The Rangers say he’ll be fine and ready to resume baseball activities and conditioning in a few days.

NHL news: All-Stars announced

The NHL All-Star rosters were announced yesterday. Don’t forget, the new format is a schoolyard pick, so “East” and “West” rosters don’t exist time around. The six players voted in by the fans were Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Marc-Andre Fleury. Maybe the 80,000 fans at Heinz Field all filled out ballots on January 1?

Think hockey isn’t a young man’s game? Think again. There are 20 first-time All-Stars on this year’s roster, including Steven Stamkos, Matt Duchene and Ryan Kesler. Among the biggest snubs: Henrik Zetterberg, who was passed over for the likes of Ales Hemsky. Ugh.

NCAA football news: Michigan names Brady Hoke head coach

It wasn’t quite what Michigan had in mind when it fired Rich Rodriguez. The Wolverines had aspirations of Jim Harbaugh or Les Miles taking over. But, in the end, they settled for San Diego State’s Brady Hoke. He led the Aztecs to a 9-4 record in the Mountain West despite sharing the conference with TCU and Utah.

UFC news: Brock Lesnar, Junior Dos Santos to coach Ultimate Fighter

With UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez out eight months thanks to a torn rotator cuff, the UFC had to step up and fill the void. It did so in a big way yesterday.

The UFC announced that Brock Lesnar will return to coach the next season of The Ultimate Fighter, premiering March 30,and face off against No. 1 heavyweight contender Junior Dos Santos. The winner of their bout will earn the right to face Velasquez when he returns.
