NHL news: Aaron Rome suspended for rest of Stanley Cup final; Flyers acquire Bryzgalov’s rights; Winnipeg hires new GM; Messier Award finalists named

Winnipeg hires new GM in NHL News today!

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Aaron Rome knocked Boston Bruins forward Nathan Horton out of the Stanley Cup final with a crushing late hit in Game 3 on Monday night. The NHL decided yesterday that it was an eye for an eye. It suspended Rome for four games, meaning he’s out for the rest of the final. If the series doesn’t go seven games, Rome will serve the remainder of his suspension to start next season.

The Philadelphia Flyers are wasting no time pinning down their goalie for next season – or trying to. Yesterday, they traded a third-round pick in 2012 and forward Matt Clackson to the Phoenix Coyotes for Ilya Bryzgalov’s negotiating rights. They have an exclusive window to sign the Russian netminder from now until July 1, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent. Bryzgalov was 36-20-10 with a 2.48 goals against average, a .921 save percentage and seven shutouts this past season.

The Winnipeg Jets, er, the unnamed new team has a new general manager. True North Sports and Entertainment will announce Kevin Cheveldayoff as its new man for the job at a press conference today. He was assistant general manager and director of hockey operations for the Chicago Blackhawks over the last two seasons.

The NHL has announced its finalists for the Mark Messier Leadership Award. The nominees for 2010-11 are Boston Bruins defender Zdeno Chara, Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan and future Hall-of-Fame defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. Messier personally selects the finalists and the winner. Atta boy, Moose.

MLB news: Papelbon fastest to 200 saves; Gretzky’s, Pudge’s sons drafted; Teixeira leaves game after beaning

Jonathan Papelbon was suspended three games yesterday for making contact with an umpire during Saturday’s game against Oakland – but the news isn’t all bad for the Boston Red Sox closer. When he earned his 12th save of the season last night against the New York Yankees, he became the fastest pitcher ever to reach 200 career saves.

Papelbon did it in his 359th career appearance, breaking Mariano Rivera’s record. Mo did it in 382 appearances.

In day two of the MLB draft yesterday, some famous sons got picked. Wayne Gretzky’s son, Trevor, went to the Chicago Cubs. The Cubbies picked Shawon Dunston Jr. four rounds later, 29 years after grabbing his father, Shawon Sr., first overall. Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez’s son, Dereck, went to Minnesota in the sixth round. Dante Bichette’s and Dwight Smith’s sons were also drafted.

The New York Yankees got a scare last night when Mark Teixeira took a Jon Lester pitch off the kneecap. He fell to the dirt and had to be helped off the field. X-Rays showed no major damage, so it looks like the slugging first baseman is simply day-to-day with a contusion. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

NBA news: Haywood out for rest of Finals? LeBron lays a playoff stinker; Isaiah Thomas a candidate to coach Pistons; Tony Parker backtracks

The Dallas Mavericks were happy to even up the NBA Finals with the Miami Heat at 2-2 last night but it appears they’ve lost center Brendan Haywood for the series. He aggravated his hip flexor muscle last night and played just three minutes. The injury traditionally takes four or five weeks to heal, so Haywood’s goose may be cooked.

Speaking of geese – LeBron James laid an egg last night, his worst ever in a playoff game. Game 4 marked the first time in 90 playoff games that LeBron failed to score in double digits. He had just eight points on 3 of 11 shooting.

Shock and awe! Could Isaiah Thomas be a candidate for the Detroit Pistons’ head coaching vacancy? He is, after all, good buddies with Detroit GM and former championship teammate Joe Dumars. That also explains why Bill Laimbeer is a candidate for the job.

Oops, Tony Parker. The Spurs guard is in full-on backpedal mode after making some negative comments about his team in a French paper last month. Parker said “We will always have a good team but can no longer say we’re playing for a championship” and that “it was sort of our last chance this season.”

Parker said yesterday that “I love the Spurs. I love being a Spur, I re-signed four years so if I didn’t believe we can win a championship I would not have signed.”

NCAA football news: Terrelle Pryor leaving Ohio State

Amid the memorabilia scandal that saw coach Jim Tressel resign (we don’t need to explain it again, right?), the Ohio State Buckeyes have now lost their starting quarterback, too.

Terrelle Pryor will not return for his senior season. Rumor has it he’ll enter the NFL supplemental draft later this year but nothing has been confirmed yet.
