Thursday Water Cooler – April 8th, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

The wait is over. Tiger tees off at the Masters today and, naturally, gets top billing in the daily news.

PGA news: Nike releases edgy Tiger ad on eve of Masters

I have to hand it to the people at Nike. Instead of kicking Tiger to the curb, they’ve cleverly seen the marketing potential in his scandal. Knowing how many people would see it and discuss it (as I am now), they released a controversial commercial yesterday.

It features Tiger staring at the camera straight-on in black and white with a sound bite from his late father, Earl Woods, playing over top.

Earl Woods says, “I want to find out what your thinking was. I want to find out what your feelings are. Did you learn anything?”

Naturally, the ad is already raising controversy, as some viewers feel it exploits out of context words of Earl Woods and attaches them to a subject of which he may not have approved. Then again, Tiger himself did sign off on the ad.

Interesting stuff. For everyone anxious just to see Tiger the golfer return, tune in today at 1:42 p.m. He’ll play his opening round of the Masters with Matt Kuchar and K.J. Choi.

NBA news: J-Will drains two treys in two seconds; Raptors suffer another blow; Ginobli re-signs?

Jason Williams looked like his old highlight-reel self from his Sacramento days last night when the Magic pounded the Washington Wizards. After Williams downed a three-pointer late in the third quarter, Matt Barnes deflected Fabricio Oberto’s errand inbound pass back to Williams, who promptly drained his second trey in two seconds.

Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy said it best: “That was pretty good.”

For the Toronto Raptors it’s two nights, two losses and two injuries to crucial players. After losing Chris Bosh to a gruesome facial injury that likely ended his season on Tuesday night, the Raps may have lost Hedo Turkoglu during last night’s defeat to Boston. Turkoglu banged heads with Tony Allen, suffered a nasal contusion and was taken to hospital for a CT scan. No word yet on Turkoglu’s status going forward but the Raptors team doctor confirmed that Bosh “will need weeks” to recover from his facial surgery.

So much for all the Manu-Ginobli-to-Europe rumors. The Spurs are close to completing a three-year extension that would keep him San Antonio and avoid letting him join the mega-anticipated 2010 free-agent frenzy.

NCAA Basketball news: Wall, Turner, Cousins and others declare for draft

It appears John Wall won’t try for an NCAA title again next season after all. Along with fellow star DeMarcus Cousins and several other Kentucky teammates, he has officially declared for the NBA draft. Also declaring: Ohio State’s Evan Turner. Wall, Cousins and Turner are all expected to be early picks.

NFL news: Tebow’s draft stock rising

Maybe Tim Tebow won’t slip to the second round of the upcoming NFL draft like we thought he would. The Florida product is starting to gain first-round momentum.

It’s only hearsay for now, but some sources believe the Buffalo Bills are an example of a team that would take a chance on Tebow early (10th overall) given his leadership skills and his ability to put fans in seats. Should be interesting.
