Wednesday Water Cooler – April 7th, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

A devastating blow to a playoff bubble team in the NBA was yesterday’s biggest story. Let’s find out why basketball fans north of the border cried themselves to sleep last night.

NBA news: Bosh likely done for the season

We’ve seen time and time again just how bad the Toronto Raptors are without their superstar, Chris Bosh. CB4 averages over 24 points and 11 rebounds per game, which is simply irreplaceable production. The Raptors thus have to be extremely worried about their playoff prospects after Bosh went down with what is likely a season-ending injury last night.

During last night’s loss to Cleveland, Bosh took a heavy (though accidental) elbow from Antawn Jamison and collapsed in a heap, bleeding profusely from his nose and mouth. After being taken to hospital, the Raps learned that Bosh had suffered multiple facial fractures. All signs indicate that his season is over. Can the Raps retain their tiny one-game lead over the Bulls during the final playoff stretch? Don’t count on it.

MLB news: Chris Carpenter wants dirtier baseballs; Carl Crawford dodges pie

During and after his opening start of the season, Chris Carpenter had a bone to pick with the Cincinnati Reds. If you noticed Carpenter yelling at the umpire during the game, it’s because he was upset about the baseballs at Great American Ballpark being too clean. It’s a major-league rule, believe it or not, that balls must be properly “rubbed” in Lena Blackburne Baseball Rubbing Mud. No joke.

Carpenter believed the balls were conspicuously clean – to the point where they were slippery and could hurt batters on errant throws. On one hand, John Smoltz’s similar complaint last September backs up Carpenter. On the other hand, Smoltz was also a Cardinal at the time, so the whole fiasco could be a ploy by Tony La Russa for all we know.

How fast is Carl Crawford? Fast enough to become just about the only ballplayer I’ve seen to successfully dodge a pie during a post-game interview. He did that yesterday, thwarting an attack by Dioner Navarro.

NFL news: Albert Haynesworth on the block…or is he?

It’s amazing just how often we see a team sign someone to a megadeal in sports only to regret it and try to move that player just a year later. That’s the case with Washington and former Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. The ’Skins are trying to move the big fella, partially because of his mammoth salary.

Correction: Washington was trying to trade him – before it had to pay his $21-million bonus on April Fool’s day. Now that the Redskins got dinged on the guaranteed money, Haynesworth is only owed $16.2 million over the next three years – a bargain for a 28-year-old Pro Bowler. It will take a serious offer to steal him away. It’s not impossible, however, as new head coach Mike Shanahan is peeved at Haynesworth for skipping offseason workouts.

NHL news: Washington senator predicts the future

I don’t know whether he really knows his hockey or has no idea what he’s talking about. But, for some odd reason, U.S. Senator John Thune posted an invite to Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarter-final, featuring the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins. The Caps are highly likely to host a game next Thursday but, uh, Senator? Boston hasn’t even clinched a playoff spot yet, sir.
