Milton Bradley

We open today’s sports news with heavy hearts, as it’s time to acknowledge the tragedy that happened at the University of Virginia this week.

NCAA lacrosse news: thousands attend vigil for slain lacrosse star Yeardley Love

The scariest part is that no one saw the warning signs. University of Virginia lacrosse star Yeardley love was found brutally beaten to death in her off-campus apartment early Monday morning. Her ex-boyfriend George Huguely, captain of the men’s lacrosse team, has been charged in her murder. He has a history of violence and alcohol abuse, as police have learned this week

Thousands of students and loved ones attended a vigil in Love’s honor last night.

MLB news: Milton Bradley turns to Mariners for emotional help

Just because he’s a little out there doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a heart. Milton Bradley left Safeco field Tuesday night in a bad mental state, as his teammates described, after striking out twice and being removed from the game. He met with Mariners management yesterday and told them honestly: “I need your help.”

Bradley has plenty of issues to work through. He’s an emotional guy that describes himself as baseball’s Kanye West and tends to get choked up when he talks about his road to the big leagues – especially when he’s speaking to kids at schools.

Good for Bradley for addressing his troubles. And good for Eric Byrnes for not taking life too seriously. Byrnes, recently cut by the Mariners after a disastrous start to the season, isn’t exactly retired. He’s moved onto softball. Not competitive softball; rec softball. The kind you and I play. He’s reportedly pumped to “play with his buddies” and plans to save the ball when he gets his first career hit. No excuse for his team not to win it all.

NBA news: Antoine Walker to attempt comeback

Former All-Star, frivolous spender and poster boy for bad eating Antoine Walker plans an NBA comeback attempt. He’s getting help from his former coach Rick Pitino and working out with several Louisville Cardinals to get in shape and hopefully attract interest from some NBA teams. The 34-year-old is a three-time All-Star and averages 17.5 points per game in his career.

NHL news: Details of the “shark toss” revealed

So we discussed the fans throwing a shark onto the ice in Game 2 of the San Jose/Detroit series Sunday night. But how did they manage to smuggle a three-foot leopard Shark into the arena?

Well, the details have been made public. The shark toss, which was the second of their career, went something like this:

The guys procured the shark by offering $50 to any local fisherman who could catch one. At roughly 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, someone made the catch. The best part about getting their shark just 24 hours before game time: it was fresh and didn’t emit any noticeable odors.

The next day, the shark caper crew taped the big creature to their 6’3” friend’s leg and made him wear baggy pants. He got into the arena without any trouble. Then, during the flashy team introductions, they unstrapped the shark and hid it under their seat.

After that, they just waited for a goal and heaved the bad boy (with an octopus sewn into its mouth) over the glass. The tosser even had a clothing-and-seat-switch ready for the right moment…and was never caught.
