Monday Water Cooler – April 5th, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

The sports world will hold its breath for the Tiger Woods press conference today. We’ll have more on that tomorrow. For now, let’s start with the blockbuster NFL trade that stole the show this past weekend.

NFL news: Eagles ship McNabb to Redskins

BOOM. After months of speculation, the Donovan McNabb era is over in Philadelphia.

Wait a minute – the Eagles traded him within the division?

Yep. Believe it or not, Philadelphia shipped its long-time franchise quarterback next door to its NFC East neighbour Washington Redskins. In exchange, the Eagles received a second-round pick (37th overall) and a conditional pick for next season.

The deal raises a bunch more speculation. How will Kevin Kolb fare with the reins handed to him? What will happen to now-backup quarterback Jason Campbell? Don’t be surprised if the Redskins move him to a desperate team before draft day.

The Eagles and ’Skins weren’t the only busy NFC East teams over the weekend. The Dallas Cowboys cut five-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Flozell Adams and former Pro Bowl safety Ken Hamlin. Happy trails, fellas.

Quick T.O. update: the Bengals rumors aren’t dead in the water. Cincinnati reportedly plans to revisit the Terrell Owens possibility after the draft.

MLB news: Red Sox win a wild season opener

As your boy Shea Matthews predicted, the Boston Red Sox edged the New York Yankees in the 2010 MLB season opener last night. Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis led the way, combining for six hits and five RBI. Another highlight was Curtis Granderson’s mammoth 400-plus-foot homer in his first at-bat as a Yankee.

We won’t provide game summaries and box scores in this column all season long, but I just wanted to make sure you all knew the season was under way. Enjoy today’s matinees!

NBA news: Nelson ties wins record; K-Mart hates April Fool’s Day

Congrats to Warriors head coach Don Nelson. Fittingly, he beat the Toronto Raptors yesterday, as one of their former head coaches, Lenny Wilkens, was in sole possession of the NBA’s all-time wins lead at 1,332. Now, he shares that distinction with Nelson. I’m all for Nelson breaking the record. With respect to Wilkens, he’s also the all-time leader in losses. If he’s the winningest and losingest coach of all-time, he’s really just the “coachingest” coach, isn’t he?

I don’t know Kenyon Martin personally. But I can tell by taking one quick look at the guy that he probably isn’t a huge fan of April Fool’s Day pranks. An unnamed Denver Nuggets ball boy thought otherwise this week when he filled Martin’s car with buttered popcorn. Martin freaked out, threatened to “put his hands on whoever did it,” said “it’s [expletive] personal” and even claimed he’d skip the playoffs unless someone came forward.

Yikes. Sounds like the incident is starting to blow over. But hey, ball boy, don’t mess with K-Mart’s wheels again.

NCAA basketball news: Da’Sean Butler has torn ACL

If you saw the way he went down against Duke, screaming in pain after his knee buckled, you may have already known the injury. I did, along with my fellow armchair team doctors watching the Duke/West Virginia Final Four matchup on Saturday.

“Dude, that’s a torn ACL.”

Da’Sean Butler indeed tore his ACL, sprained his MCL and suffered two bone bruises in a hard fall Saturday night during West Virginia’s lopsided loss to Duke. Butler, a senior, finishes his career as WV’s third-leading scorer. He was expected to go late in the first round of this year’s NBA draft; no word on how his status will change with the injury but he’s sure to slip at least a few spots.
