Thursday’s Water Cooler – January 28, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter topics…well, the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

He’s no Roger Goodell, but NBA Commissioner David Stern did his best to rule with an iron fist yesterday. He leads off the day’s news.

NBA news: Arenas, Crittenton suspended for season

In a move that didn’t really surprise anyone, the NBA put Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton out of their misery (our misery?) yesterday, suspending them for the remainder of the NBA season. The decision, of course, stems from the Washington Wizards’ locker room gunplay incident. We’ve covered the topic enough here, so let’s just move on and declare this case closed, shall we?

MLB news: Randy Winn wins, Andre Dawson loses

Evidently deciding that 3,598 30-home-run hitters were enough for their lineup, the New York Yankees appear to be letting Johnny Damon walk this offseason. By signing Randy Winn, they’re clearly committing to better outfield defense this season. With Curtis Granderson also joining the team, it’s safe to say the Yankees have improved pretty much the only area that needed improving. Scary stuff. Naturally, they have the best 2010 World Series futures of any team right now.

After a lengthy wait and many debates among fans and voters about whether or not he deserved the honor, Andre “The Hawk” Dawson was named to the Baseball Hall of Fame earlier this month. Now, the selection isn’t enough for him. He’s incensed that Cooperstown is making him enter the Hall with a Montreal Expos hat despite spending the first 11 years of his career there. He claims he enjoyed his time with the Chicago Cubs more; he did win the 1987 MVP on a last-place Cubs team, smashing 49 homers.Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

NFL news: McNabb to the Vikings? Warner to the retirement home?

As many football fans and bettors suspected, the Donovan-McNabb-to-Minnesota rumors have already started. Not that the guys in purple want to mess with a good thing; if Brett Favre decides to come back, he’ll clearly get the reins again. But it seems Minny wants to protect itself in case Favre jumps ship and finally retires. Sorry, Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels, but McNabb makes sense. Any team just lost a conference title game in overtime is clearly in win-now mode and McNabb wouldn’t be a major downgrade from Favre if he joined the team. Brad Childress was also once his quarterback coach in Philadelphia.

It’s not so crazy to imagine, especially since McNabb has only one year left on his current contract and the Eagles may be looking to deal him. Kevin Kolb topped 300 yards in his only two starts for Philly this year.

Good for Kurt Warner. Instead of driving us crazy with the Favre-style wavering about retirement, he reportedly plans to announce his status tomorrow. Warner has another year and $11.5 million waiting for him should he return for one last season with Arizona but has taken many serious head shots over the years and publicly admitted that football wasn’t “fun” for him this year. I bet he retires but, then again, he has seven children to feed.

If the Eagles do not think they can sign McNabb to some kind of extention or if they simply think that Kevin Kolb is the QB of the future, then a deal with Minnesota or Phoenix might actually happen.

In reality though, as long as Andy Reid is head coach I think McNabb stays in Philly.
