Monday Water Cooler – January 25, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter topics…well, the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

We’ve got a little bit of everything in the sports world this Monday: trade rumors, retirement rumors, signings, ownership changes and…biting? Oh, hockey. You never cease to perpetuate your own stereotype.

NBA news: Suns put Amare Stoudemire on the block

Fading fast in the Western Conference standings, the Phoenix Suns are looking to make changes. Talks on an extension with Amare Stoudemire have collapsed and it appears they won’t retain the big power forward. Teams like Chicago, Miami, New Jersey, Golden State and Cleveland, among others, have enquired. Though a sad, sad franchise like the Nets could really use the emotional boost, wouldn’t that be a waste of an entertainment opportunity for us – the fans and bettors? Here’s hoping the Cavs step up and make a serious play for him. Even Miami would become a lot more interesting by pairing Stoudemire with D-Wade.

NFL news: has Favre played his last game?

Well, it’s been less than 24 hours since Brett Favre’s offseason began and I’m already sick of the speculation. Will he or won’t he? It’s hard to imagine Favre retiring after he set career bests in completion percentage, quarterback rating and fewest interceptions this season. Then again, he’s 40 years old. The Saints didn’t sack him yesterday but they hit him with more than a dozen vicious shots, battering him and leaving him unsure of his future during post-game interviews. The Vikings can only hope he decides soon. If he does retire, will they give the ball to Tarvaris Jackson or call the Philadelphia Eagles about Mr. McNabb?

MLB news: Tejada returns to B-More, Hicks sells Rangers

Unfazed by his mysteriously declining power and totally unknown age (if he lied the first time, how can we trust him now?), the Baltimore Orioles have brought back Miguel Tejada – this time to play third base.Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook Tejada, a .289 career hitter, enjoyed his best season as a pro while playing for Baltimore. In 2004, he battled .311 with 34 homers and an insane 150 RBI, This year, we can expect about half those power numbers. Fifteen jacks and 75 RBI sound about right.

Cash-strapped owner Tom Hicks finally did what he had to and sold the Texas Rangers to a group of buyers that includes Nolan Ryan. More power for Ryan, eh? It’s already scary enough to pitch for the Texas Rangers with Ryan as team president, as he “doesn’t believe in resting arms” and isn’t afraid to run his youngsters into the ground. What will happen with him as owner? Hmm. All I know is that I’d be afraid to date his daughter. Does he have a daughter?

NHL news: More biting between the Pens and Flyers

Like two siblings who just can’t get along, the cross-state rival Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers just can’t stop biting each other. Last year, Penguin Kris Letang claimed that Flyer Scott Hartnell bit his finger during a scrum. Yesterday, Philly’s Arron Asham said Matt Cooke chomped his finger during a melee. Payback, I presume? The Penguins denied it, claiming that “if Hartnell didn’t do it last year, neither did Cookie this year,” but one reporter did remark that he saw Asham’s finger and it was “certainly chewed.”
