Wednesday’s Water Cooler – February 24, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

Busy, busy, busy. There are so many tidbits, exciting moments and controversies happening in sports right now that I shouldn’t waste any time hyping them. Let’s get to it.

NBA news: Josh Howard out for season; Kobe returns in style

Oh, to be a Washington Wizards fan. From the Gilbert Arenas fiasco to the departures of Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison, 2009-10 has been a downer to say the least. Well, things just went from bad to worse to catastrophic. Josh Howard, acquired from Dallas for Butler, tore his ACL in his fourth game with his new team. Maybe the Wizz should just pack up now and hibernate until next season.

Kobe Bryant didn’t miss a beat after sitting out 18 days with an ankle injury. He scored 32 points in L.A.’s 99-98 win over Memphis last night and drained the winning shot – a three-ball – with 4.3 seconds left. Business as usual.

MLB news: Bobby Cox to retire after 2010 season; Royals “fan” sues mascot

One of baseball’s best, most fiery managers is calling it quits soon. Bobby Cox, who ranks fourth all-time in wins and has 15 division titles, is 68 and tired of getting ejected from games, I suppose. He’s currently commencing what will be his final spring training. It’s been a fun ride, Bobby.

Today’s sign of the apocalypse; a Royals fan – yes, they exist – has sued Kansas City for a hot-dog throwing incident involving the mascot. “Sluggerrr” allegedly eschewed his trademark hot-dog canon and decided to throw franks into the crowd by hand during a game last season…and pegged the plaintiff in the eye, detaching his retina.

Hey – if the damage is legit, I guess he has a point? No word yet if Kyle Farnsworth was wearing the Sluggerrr costume during the incident.Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

NFL news: Westbrook out of Philadelphia, Jackson into prison

Following suit with the San Diego Chargers, the Philadelphia Eagles cut their own versatile All-Pro running back, releasing Brian Westbrook yesterday. After all the shots he took to the noggin this season, it’s hard to blame Philly for wanting to hand the reins to LeSean McCoy.

Fantasy football players – make sure you pick up Malcolm Floyd as a spot-start in Week 1 next season. Star Chargers wideout Vincent Jackson will likely miss the first game of the season due to a suspension. The reason: his second DUI charge, this one coming in January 2009 and resulting in an upcoming four-day prison sentence. Say hi to Plaxico for us, V-Jax!

UFC news: Mir in hot water after threatening Lesnar’s life

We know trash talk – even violent trash talk – is part of every sport, but the UFC should be more careful. As a sport trying to win over casual fans and convince them it isn’t just a step above pro wrestling, its athletes should probably avoid making death threats, no?

Well, Frank Mir didn’t get the memo. The star heavyweight sounded off on his heated rival, UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, on a Pittsburgh radio station yesterday and went too far. His quote:

“I want to break his neck in the ring. I want him to be the first person that dies due to Octagon-related injuries.”

Oops. Frank, we know you’re anxious for your rubber match with Brock, but calm down, big guy. You’re not doing the UFC any favors. Try focusing on Shane Carwin, your undefeated upcoming opponent, before worrying about the champ.

As a long time Eagles fan it is sad to see Brian Westbrook leave the team but it did not come as a big surprise. For a few season he was their offense and it took its toll on his body. While I understand that he still wants to play, for the sake of his long term health I’m hoping he decides to hang um up.
