Thursday Water Cooler – January 21, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter topics…well, the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

Today’s news is very much about ego. We have a quarterback sick of taking criticism, a maniacal owner doing whatever he pleases, a coach playing mind games and a former pro wrestler playing heel again. Sounds like fun.

NFL News: Kurt Warner not enjoying football anymore; Tom Cable not coaching football anymore?

We had a feeling it was true after seeing Kurt Warner openly discuss being “scared” to get hit in the head earlier this season and even accusing opponents of going after his head. Now, it’s confirmed: Kurt Warner is checked out. In an interview with ESPN’s Rick Reilly, Warner claimed that he no longer finds football fun. He’s apparently tired of the pressure and can’t enjoy his success either since it’s “expected” of him. Sad to see him go….but we’re not supposed to feel sorry for him, are we?

Only the Oakland Raiders would (a) keep Tom Cable on their roster all season despite the myriad of assault allegations following him around and (b) start looking for a replacement with Cable still on the roster. Allegedly, all Davis has secretly chatted with UFL champion (and former New York Giants) head coach Jim Fassel and Marc Trestman, head coach of the CFL champion Montreal Alouettes. Leave it to Davis to search outside the NFL for coaching help.

MLB news: Angels win the Pineiro sweepstakes

In what I believe is one of the most underrated moves this offseason, the Los Angeles Angels have inked starting pitcher Joel Pineiro to a two-year deal worth $16 million. Over the last decade, Pineiro has gone from mega prospect to bust to stud. Because he completely changed his game and became baseball’s best ground ball pitcher this side of Brandon Webb last season, I like his chances to remain in the stud category. The ability to induce groundballs often doesn’t “slump.” Methinks the Angels will be happy with the signing and, should the Mariners and Rangers pass them in the standings this year, Pineiro’s two-year deal won’t be too tough to unload. NCAA basketball news: Baylor’s pre-game antics anger Kansas

Baylor and powerhouse Kansas didn’t just treat us to a close game yesterday (an 81-75 win for Kansas); they treated us to a petty clash of egos straight out of an episode of Glee or something. Did you know that Drew Brees watches that show?

Uh, anyway, Kansas is famous for its lavish, self-indulgent player introductions, which are highlighted by a two-minute jumbotron video chronicling the program’s history. Baylor head coach Scott Drew decided he wanted no part of it. Claiming his players couldn’t hear him, he led them into a tunnel during Kansas’ pre-show. The Jayhawks, especially coach Bill Self, were shocked and offended that Baylor wouldn’t marvel in their brilliance.

It didn’t quite work – Kansas still got the win – but my hat goes off to Coach Drew. The stunt was worth a shot and, judging by how much it incensed the Jayhawks, it seems like it almost worked.

UFC news: Brock Lesnar is BACK

Whether you follow mixed martial arts or think of it as a glorified version of the WWE, Brock Lesnar is probably the one guy in the sport that we all can’t help but watch. Well, it looks like his career isn’t over after all. In recent months, doctors thought the reigning UFC heavyweight champion would never fight again because of a serious case of diverticulitis that likely required surgery. Instead, the ailment has miraculously disappeared, meaning Lesnar is cleared to return this summer and start busting heads again. Don’t be surprised if his next bout is a rubber match with hated rival Frank Mir.
