Thursday Water Cooler – January 14, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter topics…well, the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

It’s not all good news in sports today, as a worldwide disaster is having ripple effects in the NFL and NBA. Thankfully, the folk hero of golf is back with some better news for us. Let’s get caught up.

NFL News: Garcon awaits his family’s status in Haiti

Amidst all the wacky sports stories of the week is a tragic one. Colts receiver Pierre Garcon has “too many relatives to count” living in Haiti, site of the horrific earthquake this week, and hasn’t learned of their status yet. He still plans to play this week but will travel to Haiti when the season ends.

As we hope Garcon doesn’t have to say goodbye to any loved ones, Junior Seau just said goodbye to pro football…for the fourth time. After all the heat Brett Favre gets for flip-flopping, you’d think more people would pounce all over Seau. Maybe he’s just having too much fun on Sports Jobs?

Speaking of jobs, Kansas City Chiefs’ GM Scott Pioli just filled one, hiring Romeo Crennel as the team’s new defensive co-ordinator. He joins starting quarterback Matt Cassel and offensive co-ordinator Charlie Weis. That gives the Chiefs the GM, both co-odrinators and backup quarterback from the Patriots dynasty. I have to wonder –is Bill Belichick on the way too?

NBA News: Blake Griffin’s season over before it starts

Poor, poor Clippers. Even when they get the first overall pick, something has to go wrong. Blake Griffin did his best Greg Oden impression and fractured his knee cap in his final preseason game back in October. He was expected to make his regular-season debut this month but a recent examination of the knee showed it wasn’t properly healing. The Clippers thus announced yesterday that Griffin would have season-ending surgery.

We can understand Oden going down – the face of a 42-year-old man must have the knees of a 42-year-old man – but no one saw Griffin’s heartbreak coming.

PGA News: John Daly’s latest comeback begins at Sony Open this week

At 43, John Daly isn’t…quite…done…yet. He’s trying for yet another comeback. The last few years have been kind to gossip blogs but not kind to Daly; in 2008, he used Jon Gruden as his caddie at a Pro-Am and smashed a tee shot off a beer can before he was discovered sloshed outside a Hooters that night (sounds like a good time to me). The PGA suspended him for six months last year.

So can we expect something different this time around? Well, he has lost a bunch of weight, and he doesn’t have to contend with Tiger in the field. So anything’s possible. And you know fans and TV networks alike are pulling for him.
