Hank Haney + Tiger Woods Split Up

We’ve got an LPGA tragedy, more bad news for Mr. Eldrick Woods and some interesting rumors in today’s news.

Golf news: LPGA’s Erica Blasberg dies at age 25

Tragedy struck the LPGA Tour this week when golfer Erica Blasberg was found dead in her suburban Las Vegas house around 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. There’s no word yet on the cause of death and whether or not foul play was involved but police are investigating.

The 25-year-old Blasberg played one PGA Tour event this year, tying for 44th in Mexico two weeks ago, and was a standout during her college career at the University Arizona, winning six times over two years.

It’s nothing compared to the Blasberg story but Tiger Woods has more bad news on top of his neck injury. Hank Haney resigned as his swing coach Monday night after spending more than six years with Tiger.

The pair won six majors together but it’s possible that Haney didn’t want to take any more blame for Tiger’s current struggles.

Don’t expect a Butch Harmon rebirth. Swing coach Sean Foley is rumoured to be Haney’s successor, though Foley denied that rumor.

NHL news: Coyotes returning to Winnipeg?

The dream of bringing back the Winnipeg Jets just might come to fruition. After talks broke down Monday between Ice Edge and the City of Glendale, the Phoenix Coyotes franchise appears to be ripe for the picking…and moving.

Canadian billionaire David Thomson has a whole lotta dough – about $19 billion – and can incur any potential losses a Winnipeg-relocated franchise might incur. Funny thing is that the Jets probably won’t lose money anyway compared to the money-bleeding Coyotes.

Looks like the chances of the Jets returning are at least 50/50 right now – and it could happen in time for next season.

MLB news: Mariners about to release Griffey?

The one risk of keeping your washed up former superstar for sentimental reasons is that his production could fall off so quickly that you have to dump him midseason and tarnish his legacy.

That’s the problem facing the Seattle Mariners at the moment. Ken Griffey Jr., a surefire Hall-of-Famer, is hitting just .208 with no homers in 83 plate appearance this season.

Reportedly, the Mariners are strongly considering cutting him.

The other weird rumbling surrounding Griffey right now: that he’s mentally checked out. Rumor has it he’s retired to the clubhouse in the middle of games to watch TV and text friends. Worse yet, two unnamed players said Griffey was unavailable to pinch hit during a game last week because he was sleeping in the clubhouse.

Not exactly the farewell we imagined for Junior, is it?

Boxing newsPacquiao/Mayweather could be back on the table

The superfight could happen after all. Famed trainer Freddie Roach, who has Manny Pacquiao under his wing, told The Associated Press yesterday that talks could reopen for a Pacquiao/Floyd Mayweather Jr. superfight once the results are in from the Philippine elections.

Pacquiao is running for Congress for a second time and leading the polls.

After initial talks broke down, both fighters took consolation bouts against weaker competition.

Sorry, but no one expected Joshua Clottey or Shane Mosley to have a chance against Pacquiao and Mayweather. And we were all right. So bring on the superfight!
