Thursday’s Water Cooler – February 11, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

We expected pure wackiness following the Super Bowl – in New Orleans. We’re seeing some bizarre stuff happening in Louisiana but elsewhere too. Here’s the lowdown for a kooky time in the NFL plus other news around the sports world.

NFL news: Saints fandom goes too far; Vick admits to mailing it in as a Falcon; Vikings fans beg Favre to return

We know the Saints have a dedicated fan base, but one Louisiana school principal went way…too…far last week. He let students at his high school wear Saints colors to school for a day instead of their usual uniforms. But when one student showed up in an Indianapolis Colts Joseph Addai jersey, Mr. Principal lost it. He told the kid, “If you like Indiana so much, why don’t you go back?” and booted him from the school for the day. The principal later realized his insanity and apologized but, boy, if this isn’t a sign of the impending apocalypse, nothing is.

If you thought Mike Vick’s reputation had nothing left to lose in Atlanta, you thought wrong. Vick recently admitted to an Atlanta radio station that he didn’t give 100 per cent while with the team, didn’t spend enough time in the film room and that he “was complacent at the time, somewhat lazy, I settled for mediocrity.” Now even dog haters will turn on him.

Good for Minnesota Vikings fans. Realizing that Brad Childress doesn’t have a face that attracts humans, they took Brett Favre re-recruitment into their own hands. They took out a digital billboard ad near Favre’s home in Hattiesburg, Mississippi reading: “Hey No. 4, do Minnesota fans love you and want you back next year? You Brettcha!” No word on whether or not Eagle fans have done the same for Donovan McNabb. I’m not holding my breath.

NBA news: Nets lose…in front of 1,016 fans

A New Jersey Nets loss is not news. After 48 defeats in 52 games, a win qualifies as a major newsbreak. But, last night, the Nets did their thang in front of 1,016 fans. That’s a “watch a shootaround” crowd. That’s a Montreal Expos crowd. Not even the Cleveland Browns could get an attendance that low when they wanted to boycott a game.

All-Star injury update: We know the West doesn’t look good to have Kobe in the lineup for the All-Star game; now the East may lose Derrick Rose. The Bulls guard got knocked down by Dwight Howard and bruised his hip last night. X-Rays showed no structural damage but his MRI results will ultimately determine his status for Sunday.

NHL news: Canada, Sweden eye Olympic injury replacements

For anyone placing bets on Olympic hockey, keep an eye on Canada and Sweden’s roster. The Canadians may lose Ryan Getzlaf to a sprained ankle. Jeff Carter is pegged as his replacement. While Carter brings speed and better shooting ability, Getzlaf is a better passer and protector of the puck, so the trade-off weakens Canada slightly up the middle. Sweden could have an X-factor in Johan Franzen. “The Mule” has been told to give the team regular updates on his healing ACL; he returned to the Detroit Red Wings earlier this week. If he plays, he’ll give Sweden a force in front of the net on the power play.

As far as the N.J. Nets, it is amazing how low a NBA franchise in a big market has fallen. There is really no excuse for that kind of performance and I am glad the fans are staying away in droves.
