Sports News – NBA news; Nets acquire Deron Williams in three-team blockbuster; Kings, Hornets talk trade; Tyreke Evans out three weeks; DeRozan rips dunk contest

Nets acquire Deron Williams in three-team blockbuster with the JAZZ

Whoa, daddy. Just when we thought the NBA was about to calm down after the Melo trade, the league wowed us again. I suppose I should’ve known considering the trade deadline hasn’t passed yet.

The latest blockbuster: the New Jersey Nets dusted themselves off quickly after missing out on Carmelo Anthony and snagged star guard Deron Williams from the Utah Jazz in a three-team trade. The Nets shipped Devin Harris, Derrick Favors and two first-round draft picks to Utah for Williams; they also traded Troy Murphy’s contract to Golden State for Dan Gadzuric and Brandan Wright.

The Sacramento Kings and New Orleans Hornets are on the verge of a trade. The Kings held forward Carl Landry out of last night’s action as they prepared to ship him to New Orleans for Marcus Thornton and David Andersen. The deal is imminent.

The Kings have lost their star guard, Tyreke Evans, for at least three weeks. He’s out with plantar fasciitis in his left foot. He hasn’t played since February 13.

Toronto Raptors forward DeMar DeRozan has participated in his last Slam Dunk Contest, or so he says. He was frustrated after the overuse of props in this year’s contest, which was highlighted by eventual winner Blake Griffin jumping over a car.

“I’m a dunker,” DeRozan said. “Dunk contests, you go out there and dunk. I’m not into all the props and everything. If there’s a dunk contest next year I’ll do it. But not a prop dunk contest. “

MLB news: Adam Wainwright has “significant” elbow injury; surgery for Vicente Padilla

Time for St. Louis Cardinals fans and fantasy baseball players to weep. Ace pitcher Adam Wainwright, who won 40 games over the last two seasons and finished second in NL Cy Young voting last year, has a “significant” elbow injury.

Wainwright felt something in his elbow during a spring-training bullpen session this week; Cards general manager John Mozellak said the early prognosis is “not encouraging.” Wainwright has flown back to St. Louis to be further examined. He tore a ligament in the same elbow in 2004 and it’s feared that he’ll need Tommy John surgery.

Los Angeles Dodgers starter Vicente Padilla will have elbow surgery tomorrow. The procedure will “free” a nerve trapped in his forearm. No timetable has been determined yet for the unusual injury.

NHL news: Nicklas Backstrom out with fractured thumb

The man who feeds Alex Ovechkin passes won’t suit up with the Washington Capitals for the foreseeable future. Backstrom, who is struggling through an off year with 53 points in 61 games, suffered a small thumb fracture on a slash from Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang Monday night. He reportedly feels “OK” but is still day-to-day at the very least.

NFL news: Broncos retain Champ Bailey on four-year deal; Saints cut Jeremy Shockey

Maybe Champ Bailey’s house-selling tactic really just was a tactic and nothing more. He’s staying in Denver. The Broncos re-signed the 10-time Pro Bowl cornerback to a four-year; terms haven’t yet been disclosed.

Let the Jimmy Graham era begin in New Orleans. Evidently satisfied with their young, new-age, athletic tight end, the Saints have decided they no longer need Jeremy Shockey’s services. The 30-year-old Shockey caught just 41 balls for 408 yards and three touchdowns last year and was slated to earn $4.2 million in 2011.

NCAA football/basketball news: Tennessee accused of multiple rules violations

The Tennessee Volunteers are at the center of a multi-sport NCAA witch hunt. Tennessee has been charged with a least 12 violations, centering around Lane Kiffin’s tenure in the football program and Bruce Pearl in the basketball program. The violations have to do with Pearl’s improper hosting of recruits and impermissible contact by Kiffin, his staff and Tennessee’s student hostesses with recruits. Details about punishments haven’t been released yet.
