Today’s Sports News – NFL news: Troy Polamalu wins Defensive Player of the Year; Everson Griffen arrested twice in three days
Fittingly, the 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award came down to a Steeler versus a Packer. Troy Polamalu edged out Green Bay’s Clay Matthews, grabbing 17 votes to Matthews’ 15. Polamalu had seven interceptions and forced nine turnovers overall in 14 games for the Steelers this season.
Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen has been an absolute wildman over the weekend, getting arrested twice in three days. The first arrest was for public drunkenness Friday night in Hollywood. The second was for felony battery of a policeman. Gulp. Griffen has a court date set for February 25.
MLB news: Justin Duchscherer signs with Orioles; Freddy Garcia signs with Yankees
The Baltimore Orioles have dusted off former two-time All-Star pitcher Justin Duchscherer in hopes that he will revive his career. Pending a physical, he’ll join the O’s on a one-year deal. He has a 33-25 record and 3.13 ERA over eight seasons with the Rangers and Athletics. He missed all of 2009 with an elbow injury and clinical depression but returned to start five games in 2010, compiling a 2-1 record and 2.89 ERA.
For anyone who believes the Yankees’ starting rotation will be fine this season: they just signed Freddy Garcia, folks. He hasn’t posted an ERA below 4.20 since 2005. Does that not reek of desperation in the Bronx?
NBA news: Emeka Okafor out up to three weeks with oblique strain
The New Orleans Hornets’ recent hot streak was built largely on defense, so it’ll hurt for them to lose center Emeka Okafor for one to three weeks. He’s out with a left oblique strain. He averages 11.1 points, 10.1 rebounds and 1.8 blocks this season.
PGA news: Rookie golfer Brendan Steele criticizes Tiger Woods
Hmmm. This isn’t exactly protocol for making a good impression when you’re a PGA Tour rookie. Brendan Steele, who was paired with Tiger Woods last Sunday at Torrey Pines, openly ripped on (arguably) the greatest golfer of all time:
“I don’t think he gave it everything today. Once it started going in the wrong direction, I don’t think it had his full attention.”
No word yet on Tiger’s response to the jab.
