MLB news: Red Sox sign Carl Crawford; Orioles distance themselves from Luke Scott’s Obama comment

Orioles distance themselves from Luke Scott

Your move, Yankees. As if New York didn’t feel enough pressure to snag Cliff Lee already, the Boston Red Sox just made another bold, bold move. After acquiring Adrian Gonzalez just a few days ago, the Red Sox signed Carl Crawford to a seven-year, $142-million deal. The contract is the 10th-largest in baseball history. Crawford, 29, set career highs last year with 19 homers and 90 RBI to go with his usual .300-plus average, 100-plus runs and 50 steals (give or take).

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Luke Scott made some odd comments to the media this week, claiming that President Barack Obama “does not represent America” and that he believes Obama wasn’t born in the United States. The Orioles have smartly distanced themselves from Scott, claiming that his comments don’t reflect the opinion of the organization.

NCAA basketball news: Kyrie Irving out for season?

The No. 1 Duke Blue Devils will have a hard time keeping that top rank for the rest of 2010-11. One of their stars, Kyrie Irving, could be lost for the season with a serious toe injury. Irving was dazzling so far this season, averaging 17.4 points per game and dropping 31 points on Michigan State last week. He injured the toe against Butler last weekend

Duke has been fairly vague about the injury; doctors are evaluating Irving’s toe and the team will learn more about his status in a week or so. For now, we just know that coach Mike Krzyzewski called the injury “a serious one.”

NCAA football news: Urban Meyer steps down from Florida

We’ve seen Urban Meyer resign as Florida Gators head coach before. But, this time, it’s the real deal. Last year, Meyer resigned from the Gators for health reasons and reneged on the resignation in a day.

This time, Meyer is stepping down “to focus on my family and my other interests away from the sidelines.” He leaves behind 64 wins, two SEC titles and two national titles with Florida. Quite a legacy.

NFL news: Matt Cassel out after appendectomy

Maybe the touchdown-plus spread in San Diego’s favor against Kansas City this week doesn’t look so bad after all. Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel underwent an appendectomy yesterday. He’s expected to “return to work” this week but that may only mean the film room. It’s unclear if he’ll be ready for Sunday’s game.

If Cassel can’t go, the Chiefs will turn to Brodie Croyle, who hasn’t played at all this season and is 0-9 as an NFL starter.

NHL news: Bill Guerin, Jere Lehtinen retire

Two solid NHL veterans with winning pedigrees retired over the last two days. On Tuesday, Bill Guerin walked away. The power forward scored 429 goals in 18 seasons for eight teams, winning Stanley Cups with New Jersey (1995) and Pittsburgh (2008). He scored 25-plus goals eight times.

Jere Lehtinen announced his retirement on Wednesday. He spent all 14 of his NHL seasons with the Dallas Stars, winning the Cup in 1999. He’s one of four players to win the Selke Trophy as best defensive forward three different times.
