MLB news: Red Sox acquire Adrian Gonzalez; Jayson Werth signs with Nationals; Cardinals sign Lance Berkman

The Red Sox Got Their Man Adrian Gonzalez

The MLB winter meetings have begun and we can barely keep up with all the major moves that went down over the weekend.

The most significant news is probably the Adrian Gonzalez trade. The Boston Red Sox acquired the power-hitting first baseman from the San Diego Padres for mega pitching prospect Casey Kelly, first baseman Anthony Rizzo, center fielder Reymond Fuentes and a player to be named. It’s a huge move for Boston in the short term. A-Gonz hit 40 homers in a popgun offense playing half his games at PETCO Park; what, then, will he do in Boston? Scary.

The Washington Nationals came out of left field with a huge move over the weekend, signing coveted outfielder Jayson Werth to a seven-year, $126-million deal. That deal means Werth, just a one-time All-Star, is now the 12th-richest player in baseball.

The St. Louis Cardinals snapped up Lance Berkman, paying him $8 million on a one-year deal. The New York Yankees and Derek Jeter finally came to an agreement; Jeter’s deal is worth $51 million over three years. The Toronto Blue Jays traded underrated pitcher Shaun Marcum to Milwaukee for second-base prospect Brett Lawrie, raising speculation that they are assembling a prospect package to make a play for Zack Greinke.

NFL news: Don Meredith dead at 72; Brett Favre injured – and out for good?

Football lost an icon on Sunday. Don Meredith, longtime Dallas Cowboys quarterback and a key member of ABC’s original Monday Night Football broadcast team, passed away. He was 72. Meredith died from a brain hemhorrage. His wife and daughter were at his side when it happened.

Is Brett Favre set to hang up his cleats for good? He suffered another injury Sunday and his status for the rest of 2010 is in question. Favre strained the sternoclavicular joint in his throwing shoulder after taking a big hit from Bills linebacker Arthur Moats on Sunday. His consecutive starts streak – and career – could be at an end. Then again, you never know with No. 4.

NCAA football news: BCS Bowl matchups set

The dust has settled and we finally know our BCS bowl matchups in college football. In the BCS title game on January 10 (feels late, no?), top-ranked Oregon will battle No. 2 Auburn in a matchup that features two elite rushing attacks, led by Oregon’s LaMichael James and Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton.

TCU and Wisconsin will kick off the BCS schedule in the Rose Bowl on January 1. Also on New Year’s Day, Connecticut and Oklahoma play each other in the Fiesta Bowl. The Orange Bowl on January third pits potential No. 1 NFL draft pick Andrew Luck and the Stanford Cardinal against the red-hot Virginia Tech Hokies. In the Sugar Bowl on January 4, Ryan Mallett hopes to lead Arkansas’ powerhouse passing game past Ohio State.

PGA News – Tiger Woods Blows It

I guess there’s a first time for everything…ehhhhh Tiger? He blew a 4 shot lead in his own tournament on Sunday and lost in a playoff to Graham McDowell. WOW I didn’t see that one coming did you?
