Major League  Baseball is doing its best NFL impression and becoming an infirmary these days. Let’s explore all the injuries in today’s news.

MLB news: Martin, Santana, Youkilis done for the season

Youkilis Done For The Season

Big names are dropping like flies in the majors right now – and some of their injuries may drop their respective teams out of the pennant races.

The Boston Red Sox, stuck competing with the mighty Yankees and Rays in the American League East, may want to pack up and go home. Kevin Youkilis’ torn thumb muscle will indeed require season-ending surgery.

Hard to see Boston staying in the hunt without its best player – especially when it already trailed in the division by a decent margin.

The Los Angeles Dodgers need a new starting catcher for the rest of 2010. It’s not 100 per cent, but it’s more than likely that Russell Martin’s labral tear in his right hip will sideline him until next year. Another catcher went down this week: Cleveland’s elite rookie Carlos Santana.

He sprained his lateral collateral ligament and hyperextended his left knee in a home-plate collision with Ryan Kalish.

The 24-year-old Santana will have season-ending surgery and spend many months in rehab before hopefully returning to start 2011.

NFL news: Okung becomes final first-rounder to sign; Andre Johnson signs with Houston through 2016

Russell Okung, viewed as the top offensive lineman in the 2010 draft class, was the only unsigned first rounder as of Thursday, but he’s now officially ready to play for the Seattle Seahawks. Okung signed a six-year, $58-million deal that includes $30 million in guaranteed money. Absurdity.

Andre Johnson wanted a restructured deal that would make him (deservedly) football’s highest paid receiver and he got his wish yesterday.

The Houston Texans extended him with a seven-year deal worth $73.5 million. Johnson is reportedly now committed to being a Texan for life. Can you blame him?

MMA news: Ex-UFC fighter Huerta wins street fight against a woman beater

If you’re a TMZ reader/viewer, you’ve probably read the story or seen the video already. A burly guy sucker punches a woman outside the bar and gets what we’d all love to see him get: a beatdown from a former UFC fighter who happened to witness the assault.

The perpetrator appeared to be a heavyweight type, but that didn’t stop lightweight Roger Huerta from stepping in and leaving the guy in a bloody heap.

It wasn’t even “pick on someone your own size”’ Huerta only wanted the jerk to pick on someone his own gender.

The video is grainy at times but Huerta is clearly visible challenging the beefcake and the aftermath is also crystal clear.
