The Denver Broncos are prominent in the news today for more reason than one.

NFL news: Dumervil tears pectoral muscle; Broncos sign LenDale White

Dumervil tears pectoral muscle

As if losing Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall in consecutive offseasons wasn’t enough, the Denver Broncos must now soldier on without their top defensive player.

Elvis Dumervil, the reigning NFL sack champ, has a torn pectoral muscle. The injury will sideline him at least four months and possibly for the entire season. Dumervil just signed a five-year extension worth over $43 million.

Bettors need to bump the Broncos down a few more spots in their NFL futures.

Broncos running backs Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter are both nursing injuries so Denver decided to plug a hole by signing LenDale White.

We shouldn’t read too much into the acquisition, however; White is suspended for the first four games of the season and will more likely just be used as a much-needed healthy practice body.

Quick Favre update: No. 4 said he will play for Minnesota this season if his ankle allows it. He also denies sending any message to the team to notify them of his retirement. The drama continues.

MLB news: A-Rod youngest to reach 600 homers; Nolan Ryan outbids Mark Cuban for Texas Rangers

Love Alex Rodriguez or hate him, he’s in exclusive company. He joined the 600-homer club yesterday with a shot off Toronto’s Shaun Marcum. At 35 years, eight days, A-Rod is the youngest player to hit the milestone by more than a year.

Babe Ruth was the second youngest at 36 years, 196 days but did it 183 game faster.

The other members of the 600-homer club: Barry Bonds, Hank Arron, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr. and Sammy Sosa.

The battle for the Texas Rangers is over. In a wild auction, the Nolan Ryan-led investment group defeated Mark Cuban with a $593-million bid that included $385 million cash.

The auction lasted 10 hours and ended just before 1:00 a.m. with a standing ovation in the courtroom.

Cycling news: Armstrong’s ex-teammate says he “encouraged doping”

I get the feeling the witch hunt for Lance Armstrong is only just beginning. Armstrong had an easy enough time refuting the words of the disgraced Floyd Landis, but what happens when a second teammate comes forward with information about Armstrong and doping?

An anonymous teammate told the New York Times that Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France winner, was well aware of doping on his United States Postal Service team and actually encouraged it.

United States federal authorities are conducting a criminal investigation of Armstrong for doping and possible fraud charges.

NBA news: Shaq signing with Celtics official

The news should come as no surprise on this blog after I reported the rumor yesterday. But what my come as slight surprise is that Shaquille O’Neal’s deal with the Boston Celtics is for two years.

Shaq reportedly signed for roughly $3 million over two years.
