Sports News – NHL news: Sabres extend Lindy Ruff; Ryan Miller admits to concussion; Hart Trophy finalists announced

Sabres extend Lindy Ruff; Ryan Miller admits to concussion

Contrary to some rumors throughout the 2010-11 season, Lindy Ruff, the NHL’s longest-tenured head coach, is staying with the Buffalo Sabres. He signed a contract extension today; terms were not disclosed. Next season will be Ruff’s 14th with the Sabres.

Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller admitted Thursday that he battled a concussion late in the season. He missed Buffalo’s final four regular-season games with an “upper-body injury” and admitted that the injury was actually a concussion as a result of taking four shots to the head in the span of one week.

The NHL has announced its finalists for the Hart Trophy, awarded to the league’s MVP. Daniel Sedin won the scoring title a year after his brother did and gets his shot to win the Hart this year, as Henrik did last season. He’s against Corey Perry, who led the league in goals with 50, and Martin St. Louis, who finished second to Sedin in scoring with 99 points.

NBA news: Knicks want D’Antoni to add defensive minded coach

The writing isn’t on the wall yet for New York Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni; after all, he finally got them back into the playoffs. But the Knicks were just as bad defensively this season as they were good offensively. As a result, their front office wants D’Antoni to bring in a defensive-minded assistant coach to help the team next season.

MLB news: Derek Lowe arrested for DUI; 10-RBI day for Ben Zobrist; Mauer “wasn’t ready” to start season

Atlanta Braves sinkerballer Derek Lowe was arrested Thursday night in Atlanta for a DUI and reckless driving. He was pulled over around 10:00 p.m. ET by Georgia State Patrol and refused a state-administered test after a field sobriety test. His Porsche was impounded.

It was an epic Thursday for Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist. During a doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins, he set a franchise record in the first game with eight RBI. Zobrist drove in two more in the second game, upping his daily total to 10. His final line for the day: 7/10, 5 R, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 1 SB. Congrats if he’s on your fantasy team.

On Thursday, the Twins acknowledged that All-Star catcher and former American League MVP Joe Mauer wasn’t ready to start 2011 and was rushed back. He’s been on the DL since April 14 with bilateral leg weakness and a viral infection. He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in December.

NFL news: Reggie Bush done in New Orleans? Tiki Barber insists comeback isn’t about money; Zbikowski’s boxing ban lifted

Is Reggie Bush done as a New Orleans Saint? He certainly seems to think so. After the Saints traded up to draft another former Heisman Trophy-winning running back in Mark Ingram last night, Bush tweeted, “It’s been fun New Orleans.” Bush is slated to make $12 million next season and the Saints likely won’t want to pay that amount to a part-timer.

Despite numerous reports suggesting his divorce settlement has cleaned him out financially, Tiki Barber insists his comeback at age 36 is not about money. “I made a lot of money when I was playing. I made a lot when I was not playing in the media world,” he said. The Giants will release the running back into free agency once it’s permitted. Tiki totalled more than 2,100 all-purpose yards in his last season, 2006.

Tom Zbikowski’s name has been cleared. The Baltimore Ravens safety is 4-0 with three knockouts as a boxer during the lockout but was suspended for supposedly failing a drug test after a recent fight. The Chickasaw Nation Gaming Commission has since lifted the ban. He’s expected to fight on May 21 and June 4 in California.
