Sports News – NBA news: Manu Ginobili injures elbow; J.J. Redick on the mend; Andrew Bynum has bone bruise, Kobe fined for gay slur

Manu Ginobili injures elbow

Age and health continue to be a question mark for the San Antonio Spurs entering the playoffs. In the regular-season finale against Phoenix on Wednesday, Manu Ginobili hyperextended his elbow after Grant Hill fell on him. He’ll undergo an MRI today. The Spurs already had the No. 1 seed in the West locked up and rested their stars the previous game, so why was Ginobili even playing?

While the Spurs could be missing a key piece of their puzzle to start the playoffs, the Orlando Magic may get one back soon. J.J. Redick has missed 17 games with an abdominal strain but could return early in the playoffs. He averaged a career-high 10.1 points per game this season.

Andrew Bynum update: his injury isn’t a hyperextended knee after all. It’s just a bone bruise. The center is expected to be ready for the start of the playoffs.

His teammate, Kobe Bryant, just ate a $100,000 fine from the NBA. He directed a gay slur at referee Bennie Adams after punching a chair during Tuesday’s game. Bryant released a statement to address the incident:

“What I said {Tuesday] should not be taken literally. My actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period. The words expressed do NOT reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were NOT meant to offend anyone.”

MLB news: White Sox “don’t have any closer”; Ryan Howard injures wrist; Bonds found guilty of obstruction; Carlos Delgado retires

Despite several outstanding seasons leading up to his ascension to the closer role, Matt Thornton has been a huge bust for the Chicago White Sox early on this year, blowing four saves in four tries. After he blew another last night – after Chris Sale and Jesse Crain put four batters on – the White Sox closer situation is in crisis mode. Manager Ozzie Guillen said “I don’t have any closer” following last night’s disaster.

The Philadelphia Phillies have yet another injury to deal with. Ryan Howard was hit on the wrist by a John Lannan pitch last night and had it wrapped following the Phillies’ 3-2 win over Washington. An X-ray proved negative and the Phillies don’t know how much time their first baseman will miss (if any).

The Barry Bonds trial came to a close Wednesday after a jury found him guilty of obstruction of justice. They jurors couldn’t come to a verdict on the other three charges, which included perjury. Bonds’ attorneys have requested that the one guilty verdict be thrown out based on the jury’s inability to reach one on the other charges. There will be a hearing on May 20 for the request.

Slugger Carlos Delgado has officially announced his retirement. The 38-year-old first baseman was a two-time All-Star and batted .280 with 473 career home runs. He tried for more than two years to battle back from injury but said “my body could take no more.” Delgado is the 15th and most recent player to hit four homers in one game.

NFL news: DaMarcus Ware gives lockout money to other players; Kenny Britt arrested

DaMarcus Ware is showing his giving side during the NFL lockout. The Dallas Cowboys linebacker took the $60,000 he received from the NFLPA and gave it back. He wants it to go to players who aren’t making as much money (guys who weren’t on a roster every week for the last two seasons).

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt was arrested Tuesday following a car chase with police. He was charged with eluding a police offer, lying to an officer, hindering apprehension and obstructing governmental function following a stop. A passenger in his car was charged with marijuana possession and resisting arrest.
