Sports News – MLB news: Rafael Furcal breaks thumb; the Canseco brothers are back; fan tased and beaten at PNC Park

Rafael Furcal breaks thumb

Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal just can’t shake the injury-prone label. After playing just 97 games last year because of various injuries, he lasted only seven games before getting hurt this season. Furcal broke his left thumb on Monday night. He was batting just .192 on the season.

The Canseco brothers, Jose and Ozzie, are back! And they’re not appearing on reality TV or pulling twin-switching schemes this time. They’re actually playing baseball. They’ve agreed to manage and play for the independent team, the Yuma (Arizona) Scorpions. Jose will manage the Independent North American League team and Ozzie will be the bench coach and hitting coach.

Things got out of hand between a rowdy fan and police at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on Monday night. Scott Ashley, reportedly intoxicated, threatened a stadium employee before the police intervened. Ashley resisted arrest and tried to high-five another fan. Police then beat him with nightsticks and tased him. A baseball blogger took a video of the incident.

NBA news: Gilbert Arenas to have MRI; Nene strains hamstring; ACL surgery for David West; Charlie Villanueva goes crazy

The injury bug is biting some playoff contenders at the worst possible time. Magic guard Gilbert Arenas missed Monday’s game due to soreness in both knees and underwent an MRI on his right knee today. Nuggets center Nene strained his hamstring on Monday and will miss Wednesday’s regular-season finale versus Utah.

The New Orleans Hornets already know they’ve lost top scorer David West for the season. It became official when he had reconstructive ACL surgery today.

Detroit Pistons center Charlie Villanueva went on a rampage last night. He was ejected after getting into a shoving match with Cleveland’s Ryan Hollins. After that, he tried to charge into the Cavaliers’ locker room and threatened to kill Hollins. Police had to make a blockade to keep Villanueva out. He’ll likely be suspended for the rest of the season.

NFL news; judge rules Lawrence Taylor a low-risk sex offender; Jenn Sterger “never met” Favre; Jets after Randy Moss?

A New York judge ruled Hall-of-Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor a low-risk sex offender today. LT had to register after pleading guilty in January to sexual misconduct and patronizing an underage prostitute. He’s a level-1 offender, meaning he’s considered unlikely to commit a similar crime, was not targeting children and his photo won’t be posted in an online registry of sex offenders.

Jenn Sterger, the alleged victim of Brett Favre’s lewd texts and photos while he was a New York Jets, spoke out on ABC’s Good Morning America today. She said that people perceive her as a “gold-digger” but that “I’m none of those things. I’ve never met [Brett Favre].”

Could the New York Jets be Randy Moss’ next team? With wideouts Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards and Brad Smith set to become free agents, the Jets are shopping for replacements. They’re reportedly seriously targeting Randy Moss, even though the 34-year-old caught just 28 passes for 393 yards last season with three different teams.

NHL news: Caps pick Neuvirth as starting playoff goalie

After struggling to find reliable goaltending for years, the Washington Capitals suddenly have an embarrassment of riches, with options like Michael Neuvirth, Semyon Varlamov and even Braden Holtby.

They announced today that Neuvirth will be their playoff starter. He was the busiest Caps goalie this year, going 27-12-4 with a 2.45 goals against average and .914 save percentage.
