Here are some key dates for the finals.

Provisional World Cup of Soccer Squads Announcement – May 12, 2010
Final Squad Deadline – June 10, 2010
Opening Ceremonies – June 11, 2010
World Cup 2010 Final Date– July 11, 2010

Group A

Group A Odds – France -125, Mexico +350, South Africa +600, Uruguay +400

  • South Africa – No firepower will be their undoing. Add in the fact that Benni McCarthur won’t be playing because of a dispute with his country’s Football Federation and there’s not much to like about the host team.
  • Mexico – Coach Javier Aguirre cleaned up Sven-Goran Eriksson’s mess. This is a good team with a chance to do a lot of damage in the Group Round.
  • Uruguay – Haven’t won a World Cup game in 20 years. They might get one this year thanks to South Africa.
  • France – Not exactly the superpower they once were. If they do well, It will be on reputation alone.

World Cup Group A Prediction:  Mexico looks like the team to beat in this group. France should finish second and advance with Uruguay finishing third and South Africa finishing a disappointing fourth.

Group B

Group B Odds – Argentina -225, Greece +500, Nigeria +475, South Korea +1100

  • Argentina – Fantastic side that should have their way in this group. If manager Maradonna doesn’t find a way to screw it up, they could go a long way in this Championship – that’s a BIG IF.
  • Nigeria – High expectations, good strikers but they don’t seem to have the system to let these guys play attacking football. They could disappoint.
  • South Korea – Cinderella story in 2002, disappointed in 2006. Look for much of the same.
  • Greece – Seem like the most stable team in the group. Solid team that could “Defense” themselves into the second round.

World Cup Group B Prediction: This is clearly Argentina’s group. Nigeria and Greece should fight it out for second. I like Greece and their cohesiveness. South Korea finishes fourth.

Group C

Group C Odds – Algeria +1200, England -300, Slovenia +800, USA +450

  • England – Lots of question marks on the team. No goaltending, scandal, and injury. At least they have the best coach in the world. Good thing they have a relatively easy groups to iron out a few kinks.
  • United States – Beat Spain last year! This is a middle tier team that could rise to the occasion.
  • Algeria – Didn’t look good in the Africa Cup of Nations – only scored one goal.
  • Slovenia – Tough defensive team that only allowed four goals in ten qualifying games. They could steal a game in this tournament.

World Cup Group C Prediction: England wins this group – but dysfunction could reign supreme. The US is the second best team in this group, Slovenia could make life miserable for their opponents and Algeria will finish last.Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

Group D

Group D Odds – Australia +600, Germany -133, Ghana +400, Serbia +375

  • Germany– Not the vintage side we expect but they rise to the occasion in the World Cup. They have the talent and the pedigree to do some damage.
  • Australia – Going to play hard but they are clearly out of their league.
  • Serbia – This is a strong, complete team that finished ahead of France in qualifying. They seem to have gelled well and will be difficult to play against.
  • strong>Ghana – Gonna be tough – especially with Essien possibly missing the tournament. Even with Essien in the lineup, they are in deep.

World Cup Group D Prediction: Germany moves through easily, Serbia second- could be this year’s Croatia of Turkey. Ghana will finish third and Australia fourth.

Group E

Group E Odds – Cameroon +450, Denmark +375, Japan, +1000, Netherlands -175

  • Netherlands – Went 8-0 during qualifying, outscoring their opponents 17-2. Dutch fans – be excited by this team.
  • Denmark – Beat Portugal and Sweden in qualifying. This team is good and should move on.
  • Japan – Can’t expect too much from this team. They are clearly the worst of Group E.
  • Cameroon – Samuel Eto alone makes them legitimate. If they catch fire, they could move on.

World Cup Group E Prediction: Netherlands is the class of Group E. Denmark and Cameroon will be close for second but I like Denmark by a hair. Japan finishes fourth.

Group F

Group F Odds – Italy -333, New Zealand +5000, Paraguay +350, Slovakia +1000

  • Italy – Qualified easily. Italy has their typical flash and solid defense. Age is a bit of a question mark but they are after all, the Italians.
  • Paraguay – Finished ahead of Argentina in qualifying. They are a solid side in a solid group.
  • New Zealand – Outclassed in this group despite a couple of EPL veterans. Don’t expect much.
  • Slovakia – Should be strong and challenge Paraguay for second in the group. Not many recognizable names but they could surprise.

World Cup Group F Prediction: Italy wins this Group easily and then the dogfight is on for second. I like Paraguay to edge out Slovakia and New Zealand to finish fourth.

Group G

Group G Odds – Brazil -222, Ivory Coast +400, North Korea +10000, Portugal +350

  • Brazil – Absolutely stacked from the goaltender to the forwards. This team oozes talent and is co-favorite with Spain to win it all.
  • North Korea – Not much to look at here.
  • Ivory Coast – Coaching issues persist but the talent is there. Potential is for a second place finish in the group but third is more likely due to uncertainty.
  • Portugal – Huge expectations this year. They are talented for sure. If they can play as a team, they could advance. If they play as individuals they could suffer an early, head scratching exit.

World Cup Group G Prediction: Brazil breezes through on their way to the Final, Portugal puts it together and lives to play another day, Ivory Coast finishes a disappointing third, and North Korea just hope to look competitive.

Group H

Group H Odds – Chile +475, Honduras +2000, Spain -400, Switzerland +900

  • Spain – Arguably the best keeper in the world and two incredible strikers. They looked unstoppable at Euro 2008 and are worthy World # 1’s.
  • Switzerland – Will be looking to avenge a terrible performance at home at Euro 2008. Optimism persists but their results will not have them moving into the next round.
  • Honduras – will play tough but be hard pressed to generate anything in this tough group. Simply staying competitive won’t allow you to advance unfortunately.
  • Chile – Beat Argentina in qualifying and beta Columbia twice to finish second behind only Brazil. They are a team to watch out for.

World Cup Group H Prediction: Spain wins this group on their way to the Finals with Chile finding a way to finish ahead to Switzerland. Honduras will play hard but is destined to finish fourth.
