Australia

What was though is that the Aussies really pushed their opponents, especially Holland, much harder their opponents.

There is nowhere near the name brand talent on this sqaud but as they have demonstrated in the past Australia plays a heavy game and sometimes that makes their opponents a little uncomfortable.

They could not be catching Spain at a better time.

Still, by way of the odds, Australia has not been given much of a chance. If they are looking for some confidence they can take some from the fact that they scored more goals against the same opponents while giving up fewer than Spain.

That doesn’t make them a favourite but it would be interesting to see how things would play out if they can get the lead on this Spanish side.

Spain

It seems like every World Cup there is an epic fail and Spain is it for 2014.

They have lost their first two matches to Holland and Chile by a combined score of 7-1 which means that they have given up 7 unanswered goals since taking an early lead against the Dutch. Even though they were highly ranked and have a number of recognizable players there were a lot who thought they were underrated coming into this tournament.

The odds may not reflect it but there are many out there who think they could even possibly lose to Australia to complete their embarrassment.

Spain is not advancing so this game is really about pride as much a anything else. You would have to think the crowd will be on the side of the Socceroos but will that and a lack of confidence to the Spanish game be enough. At -250 there is now way you can back Spain.

The payout is just too minscule to justify the risk with a team that has shown no resilience since coming to Brazil.

The Spaniards will get at least one win in Brazil to save a tiny bit of face. This one will probably be a little ragged but Australia just won’t be able to convert the opportunities presented to them.

A late goal will provide more relief than joy and we can start looking forward to a very different Spain squad moving forward.

Total prediction: Under
Score prediction: Spain 1 – Australia 0
