Group C return for their second round of group stage play, when the USA take on Slovenia on Friday. The smallest nation at the FIFA World Cup, can clinch a second-round berth by delivering a shocking blow to the tournament’s largest nation — who were gifted a first game draw by England keeper Robert Green.

Slovenia on the other hand jumped into first place in the group with a 1-0 victory over Algeria in the other group opener on Sunday.

This match will contrast the fast and physical pace the US played against England, with the two sides playing a slow chess match type strategy for much of the game.

Robert Koren scored the lone goal in the team’s opener on Sunday as Slovenia jumped ahead of the United States in Group C. The Slovenian captain struck a long-range shot that Algeria goalkeeper Chaouchi misjudged and allowed to bounce into the net off his arm in the 79th minute.

Algeria substitute Abdelkader Ghezzal was ejected seven minutes earlier, picking up a second yellow card for handling the ball inside the Slovenian penalty area. Algeria twice came close to scoring in the first half, when Nadir Belhadj’s 25-yard free kick forced Slovenia goalkeeper Samir Handanovic to stretch and push the ball over the crossbar, and when defender Rafik Halliche headed the ball just wide.

Slovenia’s only scoring chance before the break was Valter Birsa’s long-range attempt in the 43rd minute, tipped over the bar with a spectacular right-hand save by Chaouchi. After such a victory expectations obviously run high.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the Americans don’t want to be in the position of having only one point through two matches while Slovenia has six and England may have four. Coming off an opening 1-1 draw against the Three Lions, a victory against Slovenia on Friday would put the U.S. in prime position to advance heading into its Group C finale against Algeria on June 23.

Central midfielders Michael Bradley and Ricardo Clark were pinned in defensive positions against the English, while Donovan and Dempsey were pinched in, forcing attacking wingers to go wide.

Slovenia likely will rely on counterattacks.

For that reason, there has been speculation U.S. coach Bob Bradley might consider starting Jose Torres in place of Clark in an effort in improve possession.

The USA should be strong enough to win this game, and they have some players who are more than capable of finding the back of the net.

I expect the Yanks to win this one 2-0, taking away three points from this fixture.
