Slovakia take on Italy in their final Group F game in bottom position in the group, but unlike their opposition only a win will be good enough to provide a chance of progressing to the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, defending champions Italy will qualify with a win against Slovakia.
If they draw, they have to hope that New Zealand does not spring an upset against Paraguay.
The only previous encounter between these two sides was a 3-0 win for Italy back in 1998.
Slovakia was dreadful on attack against Paraguay. Their only shot on target was a stoppage time effort by substitute Filip Holosko. Paraguay’s coach Gerardo Martino opted to switch from a 4-4-2 formation to an attacking 4-3-3 against Slovakia, putting Santa Cruz, Nelson Valdez and Lucas Barrios up front.
The result was a 2-0 win over Slovakia with goals from midfielders Enrique Vera and Cristian Riveros in the 27th and 86th minutes.
Slovakia looked outclassed and unsure facing a physical Paraguay squad and was forced to focus solely on defense, never mounting a serious challenge to Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar.
There is nothing left to lose for them so they will have to go for it, and show some of the qualities which got them to the World Cup Finals in the first place.
Defending champion Italy had to rally to get a 1-1draw in their latest World Cup stunner against minnows New Zealand on Sunday.
New Zealand took the lead seven minutes in when Italy’s captain Fabio Cannavaro made an error, allowing a tap in goal to Shane Smeltz. It ended up being New Zealand’s only shot on goal the entire match.
Italy controlled virtually the entire match, but New Zealand nearly won when substitute Chris Wood came in fresh off the bench and whistled angled shot just wide in the 83rd.
