Despite their injury setbacks, Germany stunned the Socceroos 4-0 in their group opener and will now set their sites on Serbia in the second set of Group D matches on Friday.

The Serbs failed to impress after self-destructing in the closing minutes of an otherwise decent outing, falling 1-0 to Ghana.

Tied for first in the group with the Black Stars, look for the Germans to throttle back to a safer approach, trading an all out attack for a moderate counter and a solid defensive containment strategy.

Three-time champions Germany scored two goals in each half of a scrappy match, as the pounded the Australians in their group opener. Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose scored in the first 30 minutes as Australia coach Pim Verbeek’s defensive tactics imploded, leaving the Socceroos wide open.

Thomas Mueller and Cacau added the insurance goals against an overwhelmed Australian side that had no luck grinding their way back into the contest.

Things got dicey in the second half beginning with Lucas Neill’s knee into the back of striker Klose. That action combined with a red card for Australia’s Tim Cahill in the 56th minute for a reckless challenge on Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The win came without injured captain Michael Ballack, so any worries Germany might have had about the loss of the influential captain were quickly put to rest. Germany was in complete control throughout the match and showed just how strong a presence they will be.

After a 1-0 loss to Ghana, Serbia is scraping to find someone or something to blame for the loss. They have even gone as far as to blame the ball itself. As ridiculous as that sounds it’s the truth. Defender Nemanja Vidic looked a bit lost on a play and seemed to think the ball would go over his head.

Their coach had a different gripe, saying Aleksandar Lukovic’s dismissal for a second yellow in the 74th minute had been too harsh and had turned the game.

Nine minutes after that setback, substitute Zdravko Kuzmanovic’s raised arm struck a ball that was hit across the area to give away the penalty that put Ghana ahead and triggered wild celebrations from the already noisy African crowd.

At this point it may be time to count the Serbs out against a dominant German team.

Given Serbia’s poor debut and Germany’s thrashing of Australia, Die Mannschaft should be able to win here. However, I can’t see them putting away too many goals with a more conservative pace against a more dangerous side like the Serbs.
