Paraguay is eying its first ever trip to the World Cup semifinals but must get past pre-tournament favorites Spain, who is aiming to at least equal their best ever finish of fourth place at a World Cup when the two do battle in a quarterfinal clash at Johannesburg on Saturday.

The two teams have met just three times in the past with Spain winning once and the other two ending in draws.

After a shocking 1-0 upset to Switzerland in their opening game, La Roja rebounded beating Honduras and Chile to win Group H with six points and a one goal differential over the Chileans, before defeating Iberian Peninsula neighbors Portugal in a 1-0 round of 16 victory.

Spain seem to be peaking at the right time and strapping striker David Villa is leading the pack in this year’s Golden Boot race, with four goals including the winner against the Portuguese. So far that’s a good thing for Spain, as his counterpart Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, who was finally taken off against Portugal and replaced by Fernando Llorente, is ice-cold.

If Paraguay is to make to the semifinals, they must not only parlay Villa, but the midfield duo of Xavi and Andres Iniesta, who when set loose in front of the more defensively minded Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets, can be very dangerous as well.

Defensively the Spaniards are solid with Gerard Pique, Carles Puyol, Joan Capdevila, Sergio Ramos, and keeper Iker Casillas, who has been strong between the sticks.

It’s no accident that La Albirroja are here at this stage of the tournament having put together a fine run that started by drawing with reigning World Cup champions Italy 1-1, and then beating Slovakia 2-0 and drawing New Zealand 0-0 for five points and the top spot in Group F. They then beat a fierce Japan side 5-3 in a penalty shootout in the Round of 16 after being scoreless for 120 minutes.

For all the scoring power Paraguay has up front, they have not been impressive in the goal scoring column, netting just three goals over five games. Benfica striker Oscar Cardozo is the only forward player to have scored — the winning penalty against Japan.

Elsewhere, veteran striker Roque Santa Cruz is under pressure from coach Gerardo Martino for his place in the side as he has been held to just five shots on target and no goals.

All of this could prove lethal against the Spaniards, who if they are allowed to get ahead, are masters at ball possession and will limit Paraguay’s chances of getting back in the game. Paraguay needs to set the pace and establish an earlier attack or they will watch their World Cup dreams fade away as sure as the South African sunset.

Paraguay will have midfielder Victor Caceres back in the squad after he missed the penalty shoot-out win over Japan through suspension, and the backline is in tact with Claudio Morel, Deniz Canzia and Antolin Alcaraz.

Spain vs. Paraguay Free Pick

Spain has a habit of underachieving in the World Cup, so it wouldn’t be a huge shock if they were booted here. However, going on the form of the two teams at the moment, and with big players like Villa performing, they should take this game 2-0.
