Reigning World Cup Champions Italy will be looking to take as many goals away from this game as possible, with it being on paper the easiest fixture in their group matches, which also includes Paraguay and Slovakia.
However, the All Whites have shown that they are not as easy to beat as many thought, proving it with a win over Serbia in a friendly last week, and grabbing a last-gasp goal to snatch an improbable draw against a dominant Slovakia side in their Group F opener on Tuesday. 
Italy coach Marcello Lippi has hinted at changes for the side’s next World Cup match, and most likely those changes would be ones to bolster the Italians lackluster attack.
Reserve strikers Antonio Di Natale, Giampaolo Pazzini and Fabio Quagliarella all hope to start against New Zealand on Sunday when a switch from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2 is possible.
Alberto Gilardino and Vincenzo Iaquinta, both in the 2006 World Cup-winning squad, struggled to manage a shot in the Group F opener against Paraguay, while Italy’s misfiring strikers undermined the team’s performance in Monday’s 1-1 draw.
The problem for Lippi is that his remaining candidates are far from household names, hence the attempt to try to find magic in a bottle with the formation changes. Could his decision to leave out several key veteran players from this year’s roster already be haunting him this early on?
It was pure pandemonium as New Zealand defender Winston Reid earned his first international goal and his country’s first-ever World Cup point with a header against Slovakia on Tuesday.
The 1-1 draw shocked the Slovaks and soccer fans alike. Robert Vittek had given Slovakia the lead in the 50th minute and seemed to steal the momentum of the game.
The Slovaks looked poised to extend their lead when a counter-attack had the New Zealand defense backpedalling before Vittek squandered his 68th-minute chance in front of the goal.
The Kiwis replaced Chris Killen with Chris Wood at the 71-minute mark, though it was Smeltz, who in the final minutes missed the side’s first clear chance to equalize when he headed wide from close range.
One would have expected a pile of Italian goals in this one early on. But with New Zealand’s newfound confidence and the anemic offensive prowess of the Italians, the atmosphere has changed.
