Venue: Johannesburg

World Cup Fixture Odds: South Africa +180 / Mexico +150 / Draw +210

Being the host nation, South Africa will play in the traditional opening match of the 2010 World Cup on June 11. It will be one of two Group A matches played after the opening ceremony, which will feature a concert with stars Shakira and the Black Eyed Peas as well as appearances from past and present world football legends.

Their opponent will be Mexico, a side that is deeply rooted in international football and loaded with World Cup history.

The teams have only met twice before – once in 2000 and once in 2005.

Mexico won the first 4-2, but in the second meeting five years ago South Africa won 2-0.

Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira leads South Africa, his fifth different World Cup team. He is an expert at conditioning, having once been the fitness coach for the Brazilian national team, and has had three months to prepare the team physically since the domestic PSL finishes in February.

The team has high hopes after solid play in the Confederations Cup, losing on a late goal to Brazil and then to Spain in extra time to finish fourth in the tournament. With their combative style and high-flying acrobatics, South Africa employs three defensive midfielders, and Aaron Mokoena and Matthew Booth on defense.

They have recalled striker Benni McCarthy who, along with Mokoena, may be a key element to victory.

Meanwhile, Mexico qualified for its fifth straight tournament and will look to change fate as they have exited in the second round in each of their last four, including 2006 where they were one of the top eight seeded teams. Hopes are riding on Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Giovani Dos-Santos to drive the team on.

They are very pleased to have avoided the real top seeds and drawn the hosts for game one, allowing them to make adjustments if necessary. They won the CONCACAF qualifier with a resounding 5-0 win over the United States on U.S. soil, and then defeating El Salvador 4-1 in Mexico.

Most predict Mexico to beat South Africa and if they win they should be confident of going deep into the knockout rounds.

Although the Mexican are the favorites, South Africa has worked very hard to prepare for the cup and will have the home advantage. I could easily see South Africa scoring the first goal, propelled by the massive home crowd. A possible candidate for this first goal would be McCarthy.

In contrast to the report the first week of June that he was unfit, reports had been floating around that Benni McCarthy was left out of the final Bafana Bafana squad because he entertained women in his hotel after the international friendly against Colombia. At the time of this writing, it was in our opinion that it was still unclear what offical action was going to be taken. Numerous AP repoorts were circulating to diffent affect. With 32 teams and the constant changes due to injuries, etc., it is difficult to always give up to the minute details.

Hey Last time i checked mexico beat the US in the Gold Cup tournament not in the qualifiers. First game from qualifiers the US won 2-0 in US soil and second game Mexico won 2-1 in the Azteca. And beating El Salvador 4-1 is not really a victory because El Slvador managed to beat them in El Salvador and managed to score one goal in the “holly” azteca field. If El Salvador can beat Mexico South Africa sure can as well!

Gentlemen-

My prediction was correct to the detail . SA scoring first and then Mexico with the equalizer, ending the match in a 1-all draw.

The last opening match to finish in a draw was in 1986 when Bulgaria and Italy finished 1-1.
