Honduras is one of the biggest long shots to win the tournament, just ahead of North Korea and New Zealand. Their opponents Chile are in the upper middle of the pack around the same region as Ghana and Serbia.
In a group that also features outright favorites, Spain, and low ranking European side Switzerland, Chile will be hoping, if not expecting, to make it through this group whereas Honduras will most likely expect to go out in the group round and will see just qualifying for the competition as a major achievement in and of itself.
This is only the second time Honduras has reached the FIFA World Cup, and after a lot of bad luck it almost didn’t happen. 
The team secured their place at South Africa after wins over El Salvador, Costa Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago. The key man in the team qualifying was 36-year old Carlos Pavon. Other players to watch out for are David Suazo, Wilson Palacios, Julio Leon and Amado Guevara.
Coaching the team is Columbian strategist, Reinaldo Rueda Rivera, who took the helm in 2007 and has been widely regarded as a success. The Hondurans impressed in qualifying and cannot be underestimated. One would suggest that they wouldn’t have the firepower to beat their opponents, but have shown to be clutch performers.
Without experience or many stars though, it would be hard to see them going to far.
For the first time since 1998, the small country of Chile returns to the world stage, beaming with hope. After a 12-year absence they believe they finally have a team that can compete on the world’s biggest stage.
Coached by Marcelo Bielsa who uses a 3-3-1-3 formation, they are small but play like they are bigger and boast the youngest average age of all the South American teams.
The stars are Alexis Sanchez who has frightening speed and footwork, and Humberto Suazo aka the ‘Little Buddha’ who will strike fear into the heads of the oppositions backline.
The fact the Chileans ended the group as the second-highest scorers with 32 goals and recorded 10 wins only raises expectations.
It is hard to expect anything but a win for Chile here, and it will be difficult for Honduras’ inexperienced squad to work through their defense, let alone score in this match.
