Though Argentina’s victory in Group B is not yet confirmed, their superior goal difference all but guarantees a place in the Round of 16, while a point would be enough to see them top the group after winning both of their opening matches.

On the other hand, a win for the Greeks does not guarantee them advancement after splitting their first two matches, but they still have a mathematical chance of qualifying for the next round with a win or draw and a South Korea loss or draw against Nigeria.

If both games end in a draw, second place will be decided by the differential in goals.

Greece have played badly, but they have now broken their curse: finally, after five games in two World Cups (1994 and 2010), they scored their first goal in the global tournament beating a 10-man Nigeria 2-1 in on Thursday.

Nigeria opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Kalu Uche’s free kick slipped by a confused Alexandros Tzorvas.

The game changed for good in the 33rd minute when midfielder Sani Kaita was red carded for kicking Torosidis thigh. Salpingidis scored in the 44th minute and Vassilis Torosidis scored on a loose ball in the 71st minute after a mistake from Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama.

In their final 2010 World Cup Group match, the Greeks will need to shut down an Argentinean strike force loaded with individual and team talent, but there best chance is to mount an attack of their own, preying on a shaky Argentina defense.

With Gonzalo Higuain scoring three goals in their game against South Korea– the only hat trick thus far in the first round — and Lionel Messi in the thick of the action, Argentina is on the brink of advancing at the World Cup.

They beat South Korea 4-1 on Thursday giving them six points off two victories in Group B. Argentina — one of only three sides to have won both of their matches– is alone in first place, three points ahead of both South Korea and Greece with a game left in group play. Against the South Koreans they turned it on with 11 shots on goal and controlled possession for 57 percent of the match.

Scoring in the 17th minute on a deflected free kick from Messi, they never looked back. Higuain made it 2-0 in the 33rd after Nicolas Burdisso passed along a cross from Maxi Rodriguez.

Higuain’s two second-half goals in the 76th and 80th minutes put the game away. The Argentine frontline can score goals blind folded but the defense still looks vulnerable, with Martin Demichelis especially vulnerable against the Koreans.

With six points in the bag, and a goal difference of +4, Argentina will no doubt rest some of their key players, but they will still be too strong for the Greeks.
