America’s hero, London Donovan, will make his USA all-time record of 11 World Cup finals appearance, when he leads the Stars and Stripes of the United States against the Black Stars of Ghana in what promises to be an exciting Round of 16 match on Saturday afternoon.

The only previous meeting between these two sides was won 2-1 by Ghana in the group stage of the 2006 World Cup.

However, this is a much different US squad who have already experienced knockout football after reaching the Confederations Cup final last summer, as well as carrying the momentum from their 1-0 win over Algeria in stoppage time that elevated them to the top of Group C over cousins England and onto the knockout phase.

Meanwhile, Ghana finished second in a rather interesting Group D, just edging out long shot Australia by a three-goal differential.

They are only the second African team to reach the knockout stages in two consecutive World Cups, since Nigeria achieved the feat back in 1998.

The United States dramatic win over Algeria seemed deserving for a side that had an early goal — their second of the tourney—disallowed.

I am sure the squad has to feel as though it’s their destiny to go a long way in the 2010 World Cup after two close escapes. However, the Americans have lost three of their four knockout matches at the World Cup finals, conceding eight goals in the process, so defense will be critical against a young, quick and lethal Ghana.

The offense seems to be clicking, with an array of potential scoring threats from Donavan, Edson Buddle, Clint Dempsey, Herculez Gomez the young explosive Jozy Altidore.Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

The Black Stars have been head and shoulders above every other African team this summer and are illustrating why they reached the African Nations Cup final last January.

The one criticism of the team is the lack of striking talent, beating their last five international opponents 1-0, while three of this year’s finals goals came from the penalty spot.

They will need to do much better than that if they are going to beat the Americans. But what they lack offensively they make up for with their stifling defense, the same defense that contained the high-powered German machine and only allowed one goal.

Finally, this match will exhibit two of the tournaments best t goalkeepers –Tim Howard and Richard Kingson — both with identical records so far. Each has one clean sheet and 10 saves in their three World Cup group matches. Howard has the edge on experience while Kingson has been accused for not performing well under pressure.

If the USA beat Ghana it would be the first time since 1930 that the US team has won two consecutive World Cup matches. The victor will take on the winner of Uruguay and South Korea, while the loser will go home empty-handed.

The United States must come out fast and strong and limit early scoring opportunities. Although Ghana is talented, the Yanks have too many weapons and solid keeping.

USA vs. Ghana Free Pick

I expect the US to clinch a trip to the final eight by edging out a one-goal difference in this one.

I would ike to correct what I see as an error. The writer wrote “They are only the second African team to reach the knockout stages in two consecutive World Cups, since Nigeria achieved the feat back in 1998.”

Are we assuming that Senegal doesn’t count when in 2002 they went to the quarter final stage?

“They are only the second African team to reach the knockout stages in two consecutive World Cups, since Nigeria achieved the feat back in 1998.”

Meaning that Ghana reached the knockout stage in 2006 and 2010, and Nigeria in 1994 and 1998. (Two consectutive).

Senegal reached the knockout phase in 2002 for the first time where they went as deep as the quarterfinals. But only did it once, as they did not qualify for 2006 nor 2010.

Saka, there is no error. Senegal did not reach the knockout stage in two consecutive World Cups. They have only reached the knockout stage once and have only been in the World Cup once.

I just wanna say THANKS capperspicks for working their asses off for us gamblers, lol. Yall the best!
