World Cup Fixture Odds: Serbia +105 / Ghana +255 / +220

Both squads posted superb qualifying campaigns, but will now need to back it with strong performances in a group that also features seeded team Germany and top Asia/Oceania side Australia.

This match should be interesting, with the sides varying so much in style and background, but with similar expectations on where they are to finish in this year’s tourney.

Serbia comes into the World Cup for the first time after another strong round of qualification.

Back in 2006 they didn’t allow a goal, and this year knocked France out of the running for top honors in the Group, as well as coming up with a 5-0 win against Romania when they needed it most.  Coach Radomir Antic played 17 years as a defender, and defense is exactly what the Serbs are known for.

They are led by 2008-09 English Premier League’s player of the year–Nemanja Vidic. The Manchester United center back will be joined by Aleksander Lukovic, wild wingback Kolarov, and capable set up man Lazovic.

Despite the youth and talent, the team lacks the physicality and experience to be truly formidable and will need Vedic to play above and beyond to go far, let alone defeat Ghana.

Many remember Ghana’s strong showing in 2006 and recognize their ability to surprise and upset. This is their second appearance and they are respected as a true giant. The team has undergone changes since 2006, and with added experience the expectations are high. They went unbeaten through four opening matches of the final round and didn’t lose until qualifying.

The side was dealt a major blow when it was revealed that Chelsea midfielder, Michael Essien, would not make full recovery in time for the finals, from a knee injury suffered in mid-December. In his absence the team will rally around skipper Stephen Appiah and youngster Kwadwo Asamoah.

The Achilles for the team is its lack of discipline and a striker who can score big. Coach Milovan Rajevac recognizes the lack of scorers on the team, and will look to use his midfield for an advantage.

With both teams looking to make it out of this difficult group, they will theoretically both be playing for a win, so despite how evenly matched they are, it is difficult to see either being satisfied with a draw.

While the climate and support in South Africa may be advantageous to Ghana, the Serbs seem to have the slight edge offensively.
