Both squads have taken just a solitary point from their opening two fixtures and their participation in the knockout stages hangs in the balance.

With a win, either of these sides could still qualify for the Round of 16. France still have a chance of reaching the second round if they beat South Africa, and might get through on goal difference. While the Bfana Bfana, who could become the first ever host nation to be eliminated in the first round of a World Cup, must win to stand any chance of qualifying for the second phase.

Throw in the possibility of a draw between Uruguay and Mexico, and the whole Group A is still up in the air.

After a heart breaking implosion against Mexico, France has continued to fall apart this weekend with every aspect of the team left in question.

Known for the veil of secrecy that surrounds their training, rumors have spread across the soccer world of team unrest. Defender William Gallas refused to speak to the media when asked about Patrice Evra recent elevation to team captain. While Coach Domenech is respected, he has never been loved, and the media has looked to dissect him at every opportunity.

With all of this going on, it will be difficult for Le Blues to focus at the task at hand.

In their match against Mexico, France was able to match its opponent for much of first half. Then suddenly after the break there was a distinct change in mood-players seemed less willing and less concentrated as if someone had flicked a switch.

After being shut out by the Mexicans 2-0 last Thursday, rumors began to surface around striker Nicolas Anelka’s half time outburst against coach Domenech, following his substitution during the loss.

This prompted players to boycott Sunday’s training in support of Anelka, who was dismissed for refusing to apologize.

South Africa was an underdog in this tournament, and has lost any realistic chance of staying in the World Cup. It may also lose its coach for what is almost certainly its final game of the tournament.

Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira faces sanctions from governing body FIFA following an attack on referee Massimo Busacca after South Africa slumped to a 3-0 defeat to Uruguay. It was a paralyzing defeat that has left organizers and the government appealing to fans to maintain their passion for the tournament even if Bafana Bafana exits, and to find other teams to support.
