The Swiss shocked Spain and stunned the soccer world beating La Roja 1-0 in the pairs World Cup opener. Now they will face Chile, who also got off to a great start with a victory in its opener as well.

Chile is the favorites to win this game where the Europeans could upset the natural order of things. Interestingly, on the three previous occasions these teams have played, Switzerland has won two.

Jean Beausejour scored the only goal in the 34th minute as Chile beat Honduras 1-0 in its World Cup opener.

They came close to doubling the lead on several occasions, once at the 62nd minute, when Alexis Sanchez sent a shot wide and two minutes later when defender Waldo Ponce saw his close-range header brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Noel Valladares.

Chile was on the offensive almost from the start, with midfielder Matias Fernandez threatening as early as the second minute. Valdivia’s tap-in in the 75th minute was ruled offside and negated. Honduras seemed puzzled by a well-organized Chile defense led by Gary Medel, relying on long-range efforts that were futile.

That solid defense and tiger like aggressiveness may be what makes this team a solid choice to carry on into the Round of 16.

Gelson Fernandes scored on a rare Swiss attack, giving his team a stunning 1-0 upset Wednesday over 2008 European champion and tournament favorite Spain. Eren Derdiyok created Switzerland’s big chance in the 52nd minute by surging through the center of Spain’s defense and slipping behind

Iker Casillas. Gerard Pique’s desperate tackle stopped Derdiyok, but Fernandes forced it into the net. While Spain badly outshot the Swiss and possessed the ball 63 percent of the time, they couldn’t find a seam to penetrate the Swiss defense.

Derdiyok nearly doubled the Swiss lead in the 75th minute when he shrugged a tackle only to see the shot rebound off the post. These two defensive teams will make for a great match, the winner being the one who can maintain the pressure and intensity.

Despite their win over powerhouse Spain, the Swiss is still a dark horse to advance from the group. This match should be an interesting one, with the clash of styles between South America and Northern Europe.

Switzerland vs. Chile Free Pick

With both sides fighting to a one goal victory in their previous matches, I expect to see a low-scoring affair ending with a 1-1 draw in this one.
