Their performance has mimicked the expectations as the Australians are currently placed bottom of the group with a solitary point from two matches.

Now Pim Verbeek’s side need to win their final game against Serbia — side that hold their fate in their own hands — currently placed third in the group with three points from two matches.

Midfielder Tim Cahill was sent off in Australia’s opening 4-0 defeat against Germany, followed by Harry Kewell’s red card in the subsequent 1-1 draw with Ghana.

Cahill will return while Kewell remains sidelined for the Socceroos final and most critical match. Australia needs to win its game and pray for a Ghana win or a big German victory to advance.

Against Serbia, they need to put the red card misfortunes behind them and come out of the gate aggressively. Verbeek made four changes for the Ghana match. Scott Chipperfield was dropped, but could contribute as a substitute attacking option. Brett Holman, who scored Australia’s lone goal against Ghana, should play since he has seen some recent success. Cahill is known for breakout runs that lead to goals.

He was wasted as a striker against Germany, so expect a different role against Ghana. Chances for Australia to advance are slim, but stranger things have happened already in this year’s tournament.

Subsequently, Serbia is riding an incredible momentum after providing the most surprising upset in recent memory by handing Germany a crushing 1-0 defeat.

Serbia will now progress to the second round if they beat Australia in their final Group D match in on Wednesday. All is not a rosy picture though, as the team has used every stop possible to get this far.

Defenders Branislav Ivanovic, Nemanja Vidic, Aleksandar Kolarov and Neven Subotic, midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic and striker Nikola Zigic are all one yellow card away from a suspension. Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

Jovanovic made the most of it by scoring the only goal one minute after German striker Miroslav Klose got ejected in Friday’s match. Serbia goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic came up with a huge stop on Lukas Podolski’s penalty kick in the 60th minute.

It was Germany’s first missed penalty in regular World Cup play since 1974.

Australia is a tough battle-hardened side and Serbia shouldn’t get complacent. Likewise, Serbia’s attack has been underwhelming through two games, although it did hit the frame twice in the second half of the Germany game.

Serbia vs. Australia Free Pick

Despite a lack of scoring punch from both sides, expect a closely contested game in which a single goal will be enough to see Serbia through to the knockout round.
