Although this match appears to be tilted heavily towards the Germans, it is brimming with all the right components to be an interesting match to watch.

Germany finished third in the last World Cup on home soil, and will be a hungry to better that placing, while Australia, who made it through 2006’s “group of death”, will be a tougher than expected competitor after an impressive qualifying performance.

Germany has reached the Finals seven times and are three-time FIFA World Cup winners.  Obviously they have experience, and are known for their tactical knowledge and ability to rise to any occasion.

They went undefeated in qualification and Coach Joachim Loew continues to find ways to bring the best out his team allowing them to perform under pressure. Injuries have so far ruled out captain Michael Ballack and four other players, severely restricting Loew’s options in midfield for the tournament and robbing his team of its natural leader.

But two comfortable wins against Hungary and Bosnia in the past days have shown the Germans were able to successfully absorb the shock of these withdrawals.

Other players to look out for are the renowned goal scorer Klose with a record of 48 goals in 93 internationals who also ranks third on the Germany all-time scoring chart. It would be brave to bet against the Germans this year.

The Socceroos, meanwhile enter their third World Cup more battle ready having come through Asian region qualifying this time around. Featuring an experienced group, including many who played in Germany 2006, they have the confidence to push all the way.

The midfield is physical and in a 4-2-3-1 formation, they could take teams to the wire.

The key will be star midfielder Tim Cahill who has a reputation for coming up big. The team is equally known for its defensive abilities with goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer and central defender Lucas Neill. They do lack a striker and it’s been 32 years since the team featured globally. Coach Pim Verbeek is highly respected by his team, and has developed a focused squad with useable skills, and should find a way to coax all he can from his defense.

Germany is definitely a favorite to again prove themselves as world football superpowers in this year’s tourney despite their setbacks.

While Australia have a good chance of getting through the group, it is hard to see anybody but Germany winning this game.

With players like Klose, winner of the Golden Boot at the last tournament, there is a good chance Germany will put more than one goal past the opposition, and it will be hard for Australia to find their way past a tough German defense.

One reply on “World Cup Free Picks – Australia vs. Germany Line”

Australia looked a little more promising against the USA but that game was far too open in the second half to compare it to a World Cup opening group match.

Having said that I feel the Germans will have far too much in attack to come away goalless and in my opinion will only need one goal which surely they can get with all their attacking options.
