Date: Thursday, September 9, 2010
Time: Kick-off: 10:00 PM EST
Venue: Qwest Field, Seattle, WA.

MLS Fixture Odds: Real Salt Lake -140
Seattle +1110

The Seattle Sounders will kick off against reigning MLS Cup champions Real Salt Lake in a late-season Western Conference showdown on Thursday night before a national television audience and capacity crowd at Qwest Field.

Seattle is 9-9-5 with 32 points in league play, but are 12-11-7 overall, enough for sixth place in the conference. The side is undefeated in its last four matches against Western Conference clubs and will look to string together its fourth consecutive home win before embarking on a series of four road matches being played in three countries over a two week span.

After Thursday’s match against defending champion RSL, they will play at Columbus and Chicago before competing in three matches of CONCACAF Champions League action before the end of the month. One has to wonder if the Sounders will save their legs for more important fixtures as their chances for grabbing an MLS Cup playoff spot are fading.

The club has experienced some recent success but has been inconsistent first battling its way through the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, beating Chivas USA, 3-1 to bring the Cup Final to Qwest Field, but just three days later would lose to New England 3-1, breaking the clubs unbeaten string with its first MLS loss since July 4, in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, RLS returns to Qwest Field, a place where the beat the Los Angeles Galaxy in a penalty shootout to claim its first ever MLS Cup.

They will bring that same form to the Emerald City coming off a 1-0 win over 2nd place New York Red Bulls, tying the MLS record of 22 consecutive unbeaten home games and improving their overall record to 12-4-7, just one-point behind Western Conference leader Los Angeles with 43 points.

Despite Seattle’s recent loss to the Revs, both sides are playing much better after slow starts, especially Real who started its 2010 campaign with just one win in its first five matches. It has now gone 11-1-6 since April while the Sounders are 5-1-2 in its last eight outings.

They table is set as Seattle seeks its first MLS win over RLS since the second game of its inaugural season, tying them 2-2 the last time the two met back on April 10 when Alvaro Saborio knocked home the tying goal off a corner kick in the closing minutes of stoppage time.

Prediction: Of the two sides Real is playing a bit better and with more regularity, but they will face the bold challenge of trying to notch a win at one of the toughest places to play in the MLS – Qwest Field. With that being said, I expect the Sounders to snare a 1-0 victory over the reigning MLS Cup Champions keeping their playoff dreams alive.
